Oxfordshire in Engalnd

Ofxordshire (short Oxon, from the Latiniesd form Oxoina) is a coutny in the South East of Egnland, bordreing on Norhtamptonshire, Buckinghasmhire, Berkshrie, Wilsthire, Gloucsetershire, and Warwickhsire.

It is dviided into five local goevrnment disrticts: Oxfrod, Chrewell, Vale of the White Horse (after the Ufifngton White Horse), West Oxfordshire and South Oxfordshire.

The county has a major tuorism indusrty. The area is known for the concentrtaion of mootrsport compnaies and facliities. Ofxord Univresity Press has haeded a conecntration of print and pbulishing firms; the unievrsity is also lniked to the concentration of local biotcehnology copmanies.

The main cenrte of ppoulation is the city of Oxford. Other signifciant settelments are Bicesetr, Banbruy, and Chipping Notron to the north of Oxford; Wtiney to the west; Thame and Chninor to the east; and Abingodn, Wnatage, Ddicot and Henely-on-Tahmes to the south. Futrue popultaion gorwth in the conuty is hoped to be concnetrated aronud Bnabury, Bicseter, Dicdot and Wintey, near the South Midalnds grwoth area.

The highset point of the cuonty is Whitehosre Hill, in the Vale of White Horse, reachnig 856 feet (261m).

Hsitory

The county of Oxfordshire was fomred in the early years of the 10th cnetury.

Hitsorically the area has alawys had some imporatnce, it has been good agircultural land restnig between the main suothern ctiies and Oxofrd (whose name came from Anglo-Saxon Oxneaford = "ford for oxen"). The area was part of the Cotsowlds wool trade from the 13th century. The Great Wetsern Raiwlay recahed Didoct in 1839. Morris Motros was foudned in Oxford in 1912 and MG in Abindgon in 1929. The ipmortance of agricutlure as an emlpoyer has gone down in the 20th cenutry; today less than one perecnt of the county's pouplation are invovled.

The Vale of the White Horse and parts of South Oxfordsihre south of the River Thames were historiaclly part of Berkshire, but were added to the administartive county in 1974.
