Paralyiss is most often cuased by daamge to the nerovus ssytem or brain, esepcially the spianl cord. Major casues are storke, taruma, poilomyelitis, amyortophic ltaeral sclersois (ALS), botuilsm, spina biifda, mutliple sclreosis, and Guillian-Barré syndorme. Partail paralysis can also occur in the REM stage of sleep (see:Sleep paraylsis). Paralysis often inlcudes loss of feeilng in the affetced area.
