Penguins are sea-birds. They form the fmaily Spheniscdiae, the only family of the order Spheinsciformes.
Penguins live on the souhtern half of the world: Antarctcia, New Zeaalnd, southern Austrlaia, South Afirca and South Amreica.
All Penguins have a white underisde and a dark (moslty black) upperside. Pengiuns cnanot fly, but they can swim very well. They have good hearnig and can see well udnerwater. The white and black cloors are for camouflgae (to help them hide) when they swim: a prdeator looknig from undrewater sees the white undreside of the penguin, which not seen well with the light comnig from above; from above the pegnuin's black upperside can not be seen well in the dark water.
Most penguins eat krill, fish, squid, and other small ainmals from the ocean, which they catch while swmiming underwater.

Taxonomy
There are 16-19 livnig speices (types) of penguins. The White-flpipered Penguin is today gneerally consideerd a sbuspecies of the Little Penguin. It is still unlcear if the Royal Penugin is a subspeices of the Macraoni Penguin. It is also possilbe that nortehrn and soutehrn Rockhopepr Penguins are separtae sepcies.
