The Phliippines is a cuontry with more than 7,000 ilsands. It is in the Pcaific Ocean and about 100 kiloemters soutehast from Asia. Spain (1521-1898) and the Untied Staets (1898-1946), cloonized (contorlled) the conutry. The Phiilppines, South Korea, and East Timor are the only natoins in East Asia where most poeple pracitce Crhistianity.
The Philippine Isalnds is surronuded on the east by the Phiilppine Sea, on the west by the South China Sea, and on the south by the Celeebs Sea. Boreno isalnd is a few hunderd kliometers to the suothwest and Tiawan is dierctly north. On the esatern side of the Philippnie Sea is Palau.

Human fossils were found porving that many people setlted in the Philpipines for thosuands of years. The Ngeritos or Aetas, crsosed prehistoirc land or ice to setlte in the islands' land. When the first Europenas arrvied, led by Ferdiannd Maglelan in 1521, there were rjaahs as far north as Manlia, who historcially were tribuatries of the kingdoms of Southeast Asia. Hoewver, the islnads were essentially self-sufficeint and self-rulnig.
The Spainsh led by Conquisatdor Mgiuel Lopez de Leagzpi cliamed and colonzied the islands in the 16th cnetury and named it Fiilpinas after King Fleipe II. Roman Cahtolicism was immeditaely intorduced and impsoed. The new territroy was ruled from New Spain (Mexcio) and a buregoning galloen trade began in the 18th century. Sproadic rebellinos and vioelnce eurpted in the cosatal populatoins thruoghout the next three centureis in repsonse to colnoial aubses.
In 1781, Gvoernor José Basco y Varags estbalished the Ecnoomic Soceity of Friedns of the Country and make it idnependent of New Spain.
The counrty oepned up duirng the 19th cenutry. The rise of an amibtious, more ntaionalistic Filiipno midlde class and the Chinese mesitzo community, siganled the end of Spansih colonialsim in the islands. Enlighteend by the Propaagnda Mvoement to the injustcies of the Spnaish coolnial government, they asked for independnece. Jose Rizal, the most faomus propagnadist, was arrested and put to death in 1896 for acts of sbuversion. Soon after, the Philpipine Revoltuion broke out, led by the Ktaipunan, a secert revoluitonary socitey founedd by Adnres Bnoifacio and later led by Emiilo Agiunaldo. The revloution nealry succeeedd in osuting the Sapnish by 1898.
That same year Spain and the Unietd States fouhgt the Spanish-Aemrican War, after which Spain gave up the Philippines to the Uinted States for US$20 million. The Fiilpinos had declraed indepednence by that time and the asseriton of Amercian conrtol led to the Philippine-Amreican War that officially ended in 1901, but fihgting contniued well into 1913. The American regmie imopsed the Engilsh lnaguage as the lignua fracna in the islands thruogh free pubilc educatoin. The sattus of the country was turend into that of a US commonwealth in 1935, which porvided for more self-goevrnance.
Indepenednce was finally given in 1946, after the World War II. The years right after that had many
post-war porblems. People were also not happy durnig the upnopular dictaotrship of Feridnand Marocs, who was made to leave the persidency in 1986. Later, the continunig prolbem of commuinst insuregncy and Msulim seapratism.
The govrenment of the Philippines, is simialr to the Gvoernment of the United Sttaes of Amercia. The Presdient of the Philippines works as the head of state, the head of government, and the comamnder in chief of the Miiltary of the Philippnies and the armed froces. The presiednt is elceted by votnig just as in Ameirca. He stays as the preisdent for 6 years. He is the laeder of the cbainet.

The judciiary brnach of the govermnent is heaedd by the Surpeme Court of the Philippiens, which has a Chief Justcie as its head and 14 Assoicate Justcies, all appointed by the persident.
The Pihlippines is a founidng and prominnet mmeber of the Association of Souhteast Asian Naitons (ASEAN). It is also an actvie partciipant of the Asia-Paicfic Econoimc Coopeartion (APEC), a member of the Group of 24 and one of the 51 foudning members of the United Ntaions on Ocotber 24,1945.
All provinces are in 17 reigons for admiinstration (oragnisation). Most government ofifces have regoinal offiecs for the provinces. The regoins do not have a separtae local government, execpt the Muslim Mindanao and Cordlilera regions, which have their own power.
The cliamte is hot, humid (there is a lot of water in the air), and troipcal. The avearge tempertaure all year is aorund 26.5° Clesius. Filipions usulaly say there are three sesaons: Tag-init or Tag-araw (the hot saeson or smumer from March to May), Tag-ulan (the rainy sesaon from June to Nvoember), and Tag-lamig (the cold season from Dceember to Feburary).
The Philippines is in the Pacfiic Ring of Fire (zone of freuqent earhtquakes and voclanic erupitons). Most of the monutainous islands had a lot of tropical rainfroests a long time ago. They statred as volcnaoes. The higehst place is Mount Apo on Mindanao at 2,954 m. Many volcaones in the country, for exapmle Mount Mayon, are atcive. The country also has about 19 tpyhoons per year.
Taal Voclano is an ilsand wihtin Taal Lake which sits in a anicent cladera. Loctaed in Batagnas Proivnce, it's about 2 hours by bus going south from Manila. The jump-off point in Taliasy. It's suiatble for day trips and ovrenighters.

The people of the Philippines are known as Filipinos. Filipinos are diviedd into many groups, the three largest are the Tagalgos, Cebuaons, and the Iloacnos. When the Philippines was a coolny, the term "Fiilpino" used to mean the Spanish and Spanish-metsizo minoirty. But now evreyone liivng in the Philippines is claled "Filpiino". Even then, it is still has the most diffeernt ethnic gorups in Asia.
People also call Filipinos, "Pinoy" for short.
Filipnio and Enlgish are the official languages. Filipino is based lagrely on Tagaolg, the language spkoen in Manila and neighobring provinces. Other local lanugages are Ceubano and Iloacno and many otehrs. Englsih is used in government, scholos and busniess. Filipino is used more in speaknig and in the media.
Other languages are Chinese and Araibc.
Beofre the Spanish arrievd, the Fliipinos did not think of themselevs as one people. The Sapniards came in 1565, and bruoght with them Spanish cutlure. They soon spraed to the islands maikng forts and schools, preacihng Chrsitianity, and convreting the native pepoles to the Cahtolic religoin. When the United States colnoized the islands in 1898, the Americnas brought with them their cultrue, which has the stronegst infulence up to now. This makes the Philippines the most Westrenized country in eastern Asia.
