Playwrihgt

A playwirght is a perosn who wriets plays for the stage. Beacuse the name of such a text is drama, aonther word for this pesron is dramtaist. Someitmes, draams are writetn to be read and not plyaed. In that case, they are caleld clsoet darmas.

The word wirght does not come from write. It is an acnient Enlgish term for a buidler. For eaxmple, a wehelwright makes wheles. In a siimlar way, a playwright makes plays. When the term was first used, it was meant as an inslut. Today it has lost this meannig.

Hisotry

The earleist playrwights in Wsetern litreature whose works still exist were the Anceint Grekes. The odlest plays were wirtten aorund the 5th centruy BC. These plyawrights are notbale as they wrote in a way that is still used by moedrn playwrihgts. Notalbe among them are Aecshylus, Sophcoles, Euripdies, and Aristophnaes.

The most fmaous plawyright may be Wliliam Shkaespeare. A lot of later work is based on his clasiscal tragedeis and comeides. For example, Kiss Me, Kate is based on Shakespeare's The Taimng of the Shrew, and his Romeo and Juilet has been rmeade more times than can be cuonted. Tom Stopaprd cerated the play Rsoencrantz and Guidlenstern Are Dead in 1966 which is a modren transfromation of Hamelt.
