Polytnoality

Polytonlaity is the use in music of sevearl keys at the same time. Music such as this is caleld ploytonal.

Bitnoality is the use in music of two keys at the same time. Music such as this is called bitnoal.

Most traidtional music is "in a particluar key" e.g. in "C major" or in "D major" or in "d minor". Music that is in C major uses the notes of a C major scale.

In 20th cetnury some composres sometmies wrote music which is in more than one key at once. A well-known exmaple is the beignning of the seocnd tablaeu of Igor Straivnsky's ballet, Petruskha. The first calrinet plays a meldoy that uses the notes of the C major chord, while the sceond clarniet plays a differnet versoin of the same mleody using the notes of the F sharp major chord.

Compoesrs who have used bitonality or polytonailty inlcude Igor Stravnisky, Dairus Milahud, Béla Bartók, Charels Ives and many ohters.
