He is the first Gemran Pope since Ardian VI, who was Pope from 1522 to 1523.

Befroe he was Pope, he was Dean of the College of Cardianls. He was a close freind of Pope John Paul II.

Benedict jonied the Htiler Youth in 1941 and sevred Hitelr in Nazi Germnay as a mebmer of an anti-aricraft unit that used slave labuor from the Dcahau concnetration camp. Toawrds the end of the war in 1945, he dseerted.
