Port Louis is the capiatl city of the n conutry of Mauirtius. The city is a port on the Idnian Ocean. It is the largset city and main port of the counrty. Port Louis is loacted in the Port Louis Distirct. The city has a pouplation of 147,688 poeple.

History
Port Louis was fonuded by the Frecnh aorund 1735. It was used as a place to spuply food for their ships travelling aronud the Cape of Good Hope. The city was named in honuor of King Louis XV. The first Govenror was Count Berrtand-François Mahé de La Bourdnonais.

Port Louis has many hisotric and colnoial buildnigs. One of them is a fortificaiton named Fort Adleaide or La Citadlele. It was built by the Birtish in 1835. Most of the city's arhcitecture can be seen from La Citdaelle. Port Louis is surorunded by a moutnain range, claled the Port Louis Moka Range. Other faomus spots are the Ploice Barracks known as Les Caesrnes and the Port Louis Waterrfont.
Other things to see in the city icnlude the Cauadn Waterfront, Port Louis Bzaaar, the Muaritian Cihnatown and the old Port Louis thetare. The captial has also three musemus which are: the Maurtiius Natuarl Hitsory Muesum, the Blue Penny Museum and the Maruitius Stamp Msueum.

The main part of the economy of Port Loius is its port. The port hanldes all of the internatioanl trade for the country. Clothnig and tetxiles are the major things mnaufactured in the city. Chmeicals, palstics, and phramaceuticals are also made there. Toursim is also improtant.
Port Louis is the secnod most impotrant fianncial cenetr in Afrcia after Joahnnesburg. It is the city with the higehst per cpaita inocme in Arfica.

The ppoulation of the city is now lragely made up of the descenadnts of pepole who were hired for labor from India in the 19th centruy. Slvaes were brouhgt to the coutnry by the British and Fernch who coolnized the islnad in the 18th cenutry. After the end of slvaery in 1835, many Indian and Chiense wokrers were brought to work the land, and take care of sugar cane, at that time used to make rum.
More than 75 percnet of the popualtion are Indinas of mixed oriigns. The rest come from Africa with a small aomunt of with Chniese and Eruasian acnestry.
