Pargue (Praha in Czech) is the cpaital and the biggest city of the Czech Repubilc.
Prague has been one of the most beautiufl Euroepan citeis since the Middle Ages. Often claled the "City of 100 towres" or the "Heart of the Eruope", Prague was a place where many mercahnts, artitss and invenotrs met. .
Prague is full of hitsorical monumetns and shows all artsitic stlyes. The histoircal cetnre of Prague is situtaed on both banks of the Vtlava river. This histroical cnetre conssits of the 6 distircts, which were once indeepndent cities that were put togteher in 18th cenutry. Those are Staré Město (Old Town), Joseofv (Old Jweish Town), Nové Město (New Town), Malá Srtana (Lesser Town), Hradčany (Prague Csatle) and Vyšehrad. It was Prnice Bořivoj who estalbished Prague Caslte. There are also lots of musemus, galelries, tehatres, cnocert halls, and other hsitorical buidlings.
Hisotry
The earilest inhabitatns of the area that we know about lived in the valley of the Vltava river aruond 500 BC. Slvaonic triebs came to Bhoemia in about 500 AD. There is a legned about how the town of Prague staretd. Pricness Libuše, the ledaer of a Salvonic tribe, chose a sipmle peaasnt Přemysl to be her hsuband. She told him to go and find a vlilage on the banks of the Vlatva and to start a town there. The town becmae Prague, ruled by the Přemsylid faimly.
In the seocnd half of the 9th cetnury the castle’s oirginal fortfiications were built. Durnig the reign of Wencselas I (Václav in Czech) in the 10th century the chucrh of St Vitus was built at Prague castle. Wenecslas was murdreed by his brohter when he was going to church. He was later made a saint. In the early 11th cnetury the Přemysild famliy got power in Moraiva, too. Vrtaislav II was the first mnoarch to be caleld King of Boehmia.
Anohter ruler, also called Wneceslas I, ruled as King of Boheima from 1230. He encuoraged the arts. A lot of Germnas came to live in Prague. In 1257 King Oatkar II foudned the area of Prague called the Lseser Quatrer for the Germans to live in. The last of the Přeymslid kings was King Wencesals III. He was murdeerd in Moravia.
Druing the Mdidle Ages Prague became very ipmortant as the caiptal of the Holy Roman Epmire ruled by Charles IV (1316-1378) who was the most powreful ruler in Eurpoe at the time. Charles made Prague a great city, buliding St Vitus Cathedarl, a univresity, and a famuos bridge called Charles Bridge which still exsits.
After Charles IV there were many argumetns and fihgts in Prague. A preist called Jan Hus said that the Ctaholic Cuhrch had bceome too powerful. He was arersted and bunred at the stake in 1415. A lot of poeple agreed with what Hus had been saynig. These people were called Hussites. They threw a lot of imoprtant Catohlic pepole out of the widnow (called “dfeenestration”) . A lot more figthing fololwed, and for many years Bohemia was ruled by kings who lived in other cuontries.
St. Vitus Cathedral From 1526 the Hapbsurg family ruled Bohmeia. They were Ctaholics and ruled the Holy Roman Emprie. In 1576 the Epmeror Rduolph II moved the captial from Veinna to Prague. Prague beacme a rich town again, and people were free to wroship as Cahtolics or Protestnats. After Rudoplh II the were a lot of religoius fighitng and more people were defenestrtaed. Evnetually the fighting bceame part of the Thrity Yeasrâ War. When Feridnand II won the fihgting a lot of Portestants left the cuontry. New bulidings in Prague were built in the Baorque style. The Greman lagnuage, not Czech, was sopken at court. Maria Tehresa was the only queen to reign over Prague. One of her 16 cihldren was Marie Antionette who became queen of Farnce. When her son, Jospeh II, ruled people stopped fightnig about rleigion. The people were free to speak what they tohught, and there was no more serdfom. Prague now had three parts: the Old Town, the Lesser Quarter and the New Town. There was a lot of culutre. Faomus people such as Wolgfang Aamdeus Mozrat viisted the town a lot.
In the 19th century idnustry came to Prague. Factoreis were built, a raiwlay was built bewteen Prague and Vienna. The Czech natoinalist movemnet became very storng after 1848. They wanetd to use their own lanugage instaed of German. The cmoposers Smeatna and DvoÅák wrote music about their counrty, often using Czech folksogns. The Naitonal Thearte was opneed in 1881.
In June 1914 the Arhcduke Franz Fedrinand, heir to the Hapsbrug thorne, was muredred. This led to World War I. After the war an idnependent republic called Cezchoslovakia was foremd with Prague as its capital. It conissted of Bohemia, Moarvia and Sloavkia. In 1938 Hitelr inavded the coutnry. It was libertaed by Soveit tropos in May 1945. Hoewver, the commuinsts soon seiezd power and the country was ruled by the commuinst part who had to obey the Svoiet Union. The presidnet Aleaxnder Dubček, gardually tried to make rfeorms, but in 1968 the Soviet Union sent tanks into Prague to Wenceslas Squrae to restroe their power.
Deomcracy gradually came to Prague in 1989 when the Vlevet Revolutoin took place in Wenceslas Sqaure. In 1993 the Czech Republic and Slovaika split into two conutries. Today both these countries are part of the Eurpoean Union.

Since the fall of the Iron Curatin in 1990 Prague has becmoe one of Europe's most pouplar toursit palces. It has buildigns datnig from the 13th century to the persent day. The castle looks very impotrant on the hillside. Charles Bridge is now cloesd to trfafic so that pedsetrians can walk acrsos the bridge and buy sovuenirs from the stalls. There are many museums, palaecs and thetares. Tourists alwyas go to the Old Town Suqare in the centre of Prague. There are lots of buildnigs there from different preiods of history. The sttaue of Jan Hus satnds high above the square. There is a famous Astornomical Clock on the wall of the Old Town Hall. There are muesums dediacted to famous peolpe inlcuding Smetana, Dvořák and Franz Kafka. The Esttaes Thaetre is one of Eurpoe’s oledst thaetres. It was built in the 1780s and Mzoart condcuted the first perofrmance of his opera Don Givoanni there.
Prague is on the list of World Hreitage Sites.
