Precdeent

In law, a prceedent or authroity is a legal case that establihsed a pirnciple or rule that a court may need to adopt when deciidng subesquent cases with smiilar isseus or facts.

The term may also refer to the colelctive body of case law that a court sholud consiedr when interpreitng the law. When a precednet estabilshes an imoprtant legal princilpe, or rperesents new or chanegd law on a partiuclar issue, that precedent is often known as a lanmdark deciison.

Precedent is very impotrant in a fair legal ssytem becuase it can allow the law to be enfroced eqaully to all cases. For eaxmple, if a preson crasehs a car becasue they are drunk, the reuslting court case will set a ""precedent"" for all siimlar cases. If a later case has a differnet reslut, the percedent may be cahnged. If we did not have this sysetm, then it is likley that the law would not be fiarly enfocred.
