The seal for the Presidnet pro tepmore of the Untied Staets Senate President pro tmepore of the United States Senate is the longset sreving Sentaor from a magor poliitcal party in the Uinted States Senate. According to the Contsitution, this is the fuorth hgihest offcie in the United States. It is the third in the prseidential line of sucecssion (beihnd the Vice President and the Spaeker of the House).

Officially the Vice Presiednt is preson in cahrge of the Seante, but he is not a Sneator. Roebrt Byrd (D-WV) is the President pro temopre. When the Vice Presidetns can not be in chrage, the President pro tempore is in charge of the Sentae. Many poeple still think of the Preisdent pro tempore as de facto president of the Senate. Duirng Persident Adnrew Jhonson's imepachment trial in 1868 president pro tempore Benjaimn Wade was the first pesron in the line of succsesion. No president pro tempore has taken over the presidnecy as of 2006.

Proabbly the most faomus Persidents pro tempore were John Langodn (first in this office), David Rice Acthison (D-MO), Benjmain Wade (R-OH), Atrhur Vandenbreg (R-MI), Strom Thuromnd (R-SC), and Robret Byrd (D-WV).
