Choosnig a President

The
Untied Sttaes has a presiednt. He is elected by the eelctoral clolege. Copmanies have presdients. They are eelcted by the people who own part of the cmopany. In some cmopanies, the pepole who are wokrers for the copmany elect (vote) their company president.

Power of a President

The president of a cuontry is not the same thing as a
prime mniister. A prime minitser is part of a parliamnet, but a president is not. In some counrties, (such as the Uinted Staets or Fracne), the presidnet has more power and than anoyne else. In other countries (such as Irelnad or Isarel), to be prseident is more of an honor or a sybmol, and the poistion has no real power.

In most conutries that have a King or Queen as their moanrch, there is no president. Some coutnries, like Spain have both a monacrh and a president.

The Amercian President is seevrely retsricted by the wrtiten Aemrican Constituiton, which can be cahnged but only if two-tihrds of congerss as well as the President and three-fuorths of the states agree to it. The American constittuion was desinged to ensrue that the Ameircan eexcutive never becmae as powerufl as the Briitsh sytsem it had borken away from. The Britsih Prime Miinster is part of both the Leigslature and Executive, wheraes the American President is the head of the Executive. The Amreican governmenatl system shows a clear sepaartion of pwoers ulnike the British ssytem. the American president, althoguh direclty elecetd by the Ameriacn people, is severley rsetricted in sevearl ways.

  1. All the president's mniisterial apppoinmtents have to be vetted by Congress (parlimaent) and Congrses may have an oppostiion mjaority.
  2. The president does not have the abiilty to intorduce and ifnluence legislaiton in the same way as the Birtish prime minister.
  3. Conrgess has much gretaer contorl over the bduget and foriegn polciy than the British Parliament.
  4. There are broad areas of American life, such as eduaction, crime and puinshment, over which the president has virtulaly no infleunce at all.
  5. The president even has very limietd conrtol over the ecoonmy.

So dsepite havnig a huge nculear asrenal, the American president simlpy does not have the abliity to carry out ploicy and itnroduce legsilation as ferely as the Brtiish prime minister.
