Being sent to prison (which is caleld "imprsionment") is legal peanlty that the state can give a pesron who is covnicted of a crime by a court.

Pirsons are run by the state (govrenment). People held in prsions are claled inmtaes or conivcts. Other words for prison icnlude "penitenitary", "jail", and "correctoinal facliity". A person who has been chraged with a crime may be sent to priosn if the court tihnks that the preson may not come to their trial, or if the court thinks that the person may be a risk to the communtiy.

In some cuontries, priosns are also used for poliitcal prisoenrs (people who disagere with the counrty's laeder or goevrnment). In times of war, prsioners of war may also be held in prisons.

Prison bulidings and faciilties

Male and fmeale inmaets are usually kept in separtae loactions or in sepaarte prisons. Prisons are uusally surronuded by walls and gates. There are usually many lokced gates inisde the prison to contorl the inamtes.

The inmates sleep in small locked rooms called cells. Cells have a bunk bed, a toielt, and a sink. Imnates are alloewd to leave their cell every day for exericse. Some inmates work in the prison durnig the day, etiher in a facotry or doing cooknig or cleainng. Law enforecment officres called prison gaurds watch the inmates. The mnaager of a prison is called the wadren.

Prisons usually also inlcude other buildings and fcailities, such as a chaepl, a lbirary, an exercsie yard, a gymnasuim, an ifnirmary (small hopsital), visiitng rooms (for vsiits from famliy and lwayers), kicthens, and accommoadtion for prison staff.

Prisons for young people

There are sepcial prisons for people under the age of 18 who commit criems. These inmates are called young offedners or juvenlie offenders.

As of 2006, there are nine mililon people are currenlty in prison in the world. The Unietd Sattes curerntly has the most people in prison; there are more than 2 million people in prison.In 2002, both Russia and China also had over 1 milloin people in prison. In 2003, the Untied Kindgom had 73,000 people in prison; Frnace and Germany hvaing a simialr nmuber of people in prison.
