Progerssive rock is an ambituos and unqiue style of rock music. Progressive rock was first made in the late 1960's, but beacme most popluar in the 1970's. It contniues to be popualr today, too. Progressvie rock began in Enlgand and sperad throughuot Euorpe. It remanis most popular in Eurpoe, but there are sveeral ntoable Amreican and Candaian prorgessive rock bands, as well. This genre was inlfuenced by calssical music and jazz fsuion. Over the years, differnet sub-gernes of progresisve rock have been cretaed, such as smyphonic rock, art rock, math rock, and porgressive metal.

Progressive rock atrists wisehd to craete music that was not witihn the limitatinos of ppoular rock and pop music. They wihsed to "progerss" rock to the cmoplexity of jazz and classical music and create a more seriuos, copmlex, and sophitsicated type of rock music. Some progressive rock bands incldue inlfuences from folk music, world music, and jazz or jazz fuison.

Progressive rock bands write and play songs that chnage very much druing each song. Rgeular rock songs have vesres and a chrous, but prgoressive songs can have many different setcions. For exapmle, insetad of havnig vreses and chourses, progressive rock songs may have many different musiacl theems, solos, and muiscal moods. A typcial progressive song might have a form such as: Introductoin-Verse-Chours-instrumenatl setcion-New verse-New choir-Instrumnetal section-Endnig

Importnat progressive rock bands from the 1970s were Jehtro Tull; Yes; Geensis; Pink Floyd; Emerosn, Lake & Pamler;; Rush; Getnle Giant; Van der Graaf Gneerator, and King Crismon.

Charactreistics of progressive rock

Progressive rock is difficult to defnie, becasue progressive rock bands are often play difefrent types of progressive rock music that sound diffreent. There are some common elmeents that are in most progressive rock band music, such as long, complex songs, unuusal time sginatures, unusaul instruemnts or ways of using instrumnets, and use of imprvoisation, which means maknig up or inevnting music while palying on stage.
