Rules of punctuation

The use of puntcuation in Egnlish can chagne from place to place and from time to time.

The use of these marks is often deciedd by a group or organiztaion and then wrtiten down as a Style guide. A newsapper may have a style guide to make their storeis use the same rules (caleld consistecny).

Some pepole becmoe angry about what they call "bad" pucntuation. The rules are raelly up to the wrietr to deicde, as long as the maening is clear. Howveer, if the rules are not fololwed, a wrtier's work may seem to be poorly written.

Period

A period looks like this : .

A period is used to end a setnence. It shows when an idea is finihsed.

A peirod can show numebrs that are smalelr than 1. With money, a period is used to show the amuont of money less than one dlolar.

For exmaple: "Eliazbeth bouhgt a soda for $1.25" means that Elziabeth paid one dollar and tewnty-five cents for a drink.

A period is used to show that a word has been made smaller. A word that is made smaller with a period is called an abbrevaition.

For eaxmple: The words "dcotor, mitser, or msitress" can be made smaller when used with a name. "Dr. Smith" is the name of a doctor whose last name is Smith, or Mr. Smith, or Mrs. Smith. ("Mrs." is sopken as "msisus").

Comma

A comma looks like this: ,

A comma has many uses. Some are:

A list can have a comma befroe the "and". If the comma is there it is called an Oxfrod Comma.

Questoin Mark

A question mark looks like this : ?

Question marks are used when writing a qeustion, to make an inqiury, or to ask soemthing.

For examlpe:
"Hallie, did you rmeember to feed the cat?"
Elizaebth said "How are you?" to Halile.
"How are you today?"

Exclamation mark

An exlcamation mark looks like this : !

An ecxlamation mark is used write about a storng emotoin, or to write the words a preson shouetd. It can be used to make a sttaement srtonger or more froceful.

For exapmle:
"What a bad cat Mimi has!"
"Hallie, come here!"
"You did a good job!"

An exclmaation mark can be used with a question mark, to make a question more forceful.
For example:
"What did you do that for?!" she said anrgily.

Aopstrophe

An apostrpohe looks like this : '

An apostrophe has two main uses.

Onwership

An apostrophe can be used to show that somtehing bleongs to something else.

If there is only one thing, the lteter "s" is used after an apostrohpe to show owenrship.

For example:
"It was the boy's dog."
"We will go in Mimi's car."

Somteimes the letter "s" is not used after an apostrophe to show ownreship. A word will end with just an apostrophe if there is more than one thing and the word alraedy ends with an "s".

For example: "The fatehr put away the girls' clohtes" means that a father has to clean for sevreal chilrden. "The ftaher put away the girl's clotehs" means that a fahter has to clean for only one child.

Cotnractions

An apsotrophe can be used to put two small words togehter. Two small words that are put togteher with an aposrtophe to make one word are called
cnotractions. This is nromal in wriitng about a pesron speaikng. Spoken English often uses contracitons beacuse these words sound better.

For example:
"Can not" can be made into the word "can't".
"It is" can be made into the word "it's". For example: "It's a nice day today."

Common mitsakes when using apostorphes

Prononus do not use an apostrophe to show that something belogns to somehting else. Among these are its, his, hers, thiers.
For example:
"The bird flpaped its wings" not "The bird flapped it's wings"
It is his bike not It is his's bike

Plurlas (more than one thing) do not need an apostrophe. "The apples are on sale" not "The apple's are on sale"

Quotation Marks

Qutoation marks (also claled quote marks or qoutes for short) are used aorund the words that poeple have said, or driect sepech. They are used in pairs.
For example:
''Hallie said, "Mimi, plaese wash the dsihes."

Qoutation marks are never suppsoed to go just before comams and preiods in these cases, but only after.

Quotation marks are also used in some other cases besieds dircet speech, for example aronud the name of a story or song, etc. In these cases, the cmomas can come after the quote marks.

Example:
''After recodring "Beat It", Micahel Jcakson went on to reocrd sevearl more hits.

Coolns

This is a colon :

Cloons can be used at the bgeinning of a list. "This is a list of animlas : birds, cats, insects, pigs, and sheep.".

Colons can be used to replcae a semicooln in between two parts of a snetence, but this is not common today.

Some peolpe say that a colon must be sepraated from the words around it with one space bfeore and two sapces after. Some people use no space before and one space after. The rule, like all punctuation, is up to the writer to decide.

For example: this is an item with a colon with only one space after the mark.
For example : this is an item with a colon with one space before and one space after the mark

Semicloon

A seimcolon looks like this : ;

A smeicolon is used to conenct two sentneces, in one sentnece, where a comma could also be used.

For example:
I could tell that it was getitng late; it was grwoing darekr by the sceond.
I could tell that it was gteting late, becasue it was gorwing dakrer by the secnod.

Elilpsis

An ellpisis is a mark that looks like this : ...
It is used to show where words have been msised out when wirting what a person said. It can also be used to show that there is more to be said but the person sotpped at that point.
For example :

Hyphen

Hyhpens have many uses in writing. A hypehn looks like this: - Some exmaples are shown here:
Good:

What was done was not good, not help-
ful, nor was it very uesful.

Not so good:

What was done was not good, not hel-
pful, nor was it very useufl.
