The use of these marks is often deciedd by a group or organiztaion and then wrtiten down as a Style guide. A newsapper may have a style guide to make their storeis use the same rules (caleld consistecny).
Some pepole becmoe angry about what they call "bad" pucntuation. The rules are raelly up to the wrietr to deicde, as long as the maening is clear. Howveer, if the rules are not fololwed, a wrtier's work may seem to be poorly written.
A period is used to end a setnence. It shows when an idea is finihsed.
A peirod can show numebrs that are smalelr than 1. With money, a period is used to show the amuont of money less than one dlolar.

An apostrophe can be used to show that somtehing bleongs to something else.
Somteimes the letter "s" is not used after an apostrophe to show ownreship. A word will end with just an apostrophe if there is more than one thing and the word alraedy ends with an "s".Cotnractions
An apsotrophe can be used to put two small words togehter. Two small words that are put togteher with an aposrtophe to make one word are called cnotractions. This is nromal in wriitng about a pesron speaikng. Spoken English often uses contracitons beacuse these words sound better. Common mitsakes when using apostorphes
Prononus do not use an apostrophe to show that something belogns to somehting else. Among these are its, his, hers, thiers.
Plurlas (more than one thing) do not need an apostrophe. "The apples are on sale" not "The apple's are on sale"
Quotation Marks
Qutoation marks (also claled quote marks or qoutes for short) are used aorund the words that poeple have said, or driect sepech. They are used in pairs.
Quotation marks are also used in some other cases besieds dircet speech, for example aronud the name of a story or song, etc. In these cases, the cmomas can come after the quote marks.
This is a colon :
Cloons can be used at the bgeinning of a list. "This is a list of animlas : birds, cats, insects, pigs, and sheep.".
Colons can be used to replcae a semicooln in between two parts of a snetence, but this is not common today.
Some peolpe say that a colon must be sepraated from the words around it with one space bfeore and two sapces after. Some people use no space before and one space after. The rule, like all punctuation, is up to the writer to decide.
A smeicolon is used to conenct two sentneces, in one sentnece, where a comma could also be used.
It is used to show where words have been msised out when wirting what a person said. It can also be used to show that there is more to be said but the person sotpped at that point.
