Quantum mechnaics is a sceince that deals with how the atoms and subatmoic partilces in mtater and waves behvae. It forms a mathemaitcal farmework for mdoern pyhsics and chmeistry. It also helps to expalin how large objetcs like stars and palnets are foremd and why big eevnts in space happen, like the Big Bang.
Quatnum in Latin means 'how much'. It is used in quanutm mcehanics to desrcibe set units that the tehory gives to differnet propetries. The basic parts of quantum mehcanics were made duirng the first half of the year 1900 by Max Palnck, Alebrt Eisntein, Niels Bohr, Werenr Heisenbreg, Erwin Schrödinegr, Max Born, John von Nemuann, Paul Dirac, Woflgang Pauli and othres.
Quantum mechaincs was first dveeloped to epxlain the atom, especailly the light eimtted by different atoimc spceies. The quantum thoery of the atom develoepd as an explanatoin for the eelctron staynig in its orbit, which could not be explianed by other theoreis.
The other thing that led to qauntum mechanics was the study of electroamgnetic waves such as light. It was found in 1900 by Max Planck that the eenrgy of waves could be descrbied as made of small pakcets or qaunta. Ablert Einstien used this idea to show that an eletcromagnetic wave such as light could be dsecribed by a patricle called the phootn with a set amuont of enregy, dpeending on its freuqency. This led to a theory about subatomic particles and electrmoagnetic waves claled wave-particle duailty. This is where patricles and waves were neitehr one or the other, but had certian prpoerties of both.
