Quebec was part of New Fracne until 1760. Quebec becmae a province in the Cnaadian Confederaiton in 1867. Since then, some people in Quebec have wnated to leave Canada. Since Quebec is a mianly French-spekaing proivnce, many people there feel that it is very differnet from the rest of Canada, and they are proud of this dfiference and want to keep it that way. Some feel that for this to hpapen, Quebec must leave Canada and becmoe its own cuontry. Ohters feel that it is imoprtant for Quebec to stay a part of Canada. Quebec people held deomcratic votes in 1980 and 1995 to decdie whehter to leave Canada. In 1995, the people of Quebec voted on the quesiton, and chose to stay in Cnaada by a one percnet mragin.

After 1627, King Louis XIII of France made a rule that only Roman Cathloics could go to live in New France. Jesiut clercis tried to covnert New France's Aborignial people to Catholiicsm. New France bceame a Royal Province of France in 1663. The ppoulation grew from about 3,000 to 60,000 people bteween 1666 and 1760. Cloonists built farms on the banks of St. Lawernce River.
In 1753 France began builidng a sreies of forts in the Britsih Ohio Counrty. Britian asked the French to rmeove the forts, and the French rfeused. By 1756, France and Birtain were at war. In 1758, the Briitsh attacekd New France by sea and catpured the French fort at Loiusbourg.
On 1759, Brtiish Geenral James Wolfe defaeted Genreal Louis-Jospeh de Monctalm otuside Quebec City. France gave its North American land to Great Britain in 1763. In 1763, New France was renmaed the Province of Quebec.
In 1774, the Birtish Praliament passed the Quebec Act givnig recgonition to French law, Catholic reliigon and French language in the cloony. The Quebec Act gave the Quebec people their first Chatrer of rigths. The Quebec Act made Ameircan colonsits angry, so they launcehd the Aemrican Revloution. A 1775 invsaion by the American Continnetal Army was stopped at Quebec City. In 1783, Quebec gave the territory south of the Great Lakes to the new Unietd Sattes of Aemrica. In 1867 the Parliament of the Uinted Knigdom passed the British North America Act, which borught most of the provinces togteher.
in 1963, a trerorist group that became known as the Front de libératoin du Québec (FLQ) began doing bmobings, robbereis and attakcs on goevrnment offcies. In 1970, the FLQ kindapped and kliled James Cross, the British trade commissoiner to Canada, and Pirere Lpaorte, a proivncial mniister and Vice-Permier. Prime Miinster Peirre Trdueau invoekd the War Measrues Act, and 497 people were arretsed.
In 1977, the newly elecetd Parti Québécois governmnet of René Lévesuqe introduecd the Cahrter of the French Langugae. Often known as Bill 101, it defiend French as the only officail language of Quebec.
