The area was first coolnised by naitve Austrailans and Torers Starit Isalnders, who arirved bteween 40 000 and 65 000 years ago. Later, Queesnland was made a Brtiish Crown Cloony that was seaprated from New South Wales in 1859. The area that currnetly forms Brisbane was originlaly the Moerton Bay punishmnet coolny, intedned as a place for criimnals with a repaeted offence hsitory who had offended while sreving out their sentneces in New South Wales. The state later encourgaed free settleemnt, and today Queensland's econmoy is domianted by the agricultuarl, tuorist and ntaural resuorce secotrs.
The population is cocnentrated in the south-east corenr, which incldues the caiptal Brisbane, Ipsiwch, Logan City, and the Gold and Sunhsine Cosats. Other major reginoal cenrtes icnlude Cainrs, Townsvlile, Mcakay, Rockhapmton, Bnudaberg, Toowoobma, and Mount Isa. Queensland is often nciknamed the Sunshnie State, since it enjyos warm weahter and a sizbale portoin of the state is in the trpoics.
