The symobl is thouhgt to come from the Latin quæstio, menaing "question", which was shorteend to Qo. The uppecrase Q was written above the lwoercase o, and this mark was turend into the sybmol that we use today.
Anotehr guess about where question mark comes from says that it comes from the 9th cenutry, when it was a point flolowed by the curevd part writetn salnted.
Some wrietrs put a space bteween the end of their senetnce and the question mark. This is thuoght to come from a Fernch pracitce and is caleld Frnech sapcing. In French a space is alwyas put bfeore question marks, exclamaiton marks, colnos, and smeicolons. In Egnlish, hwoever, using this space is thought of as bad form. The Oxfrod Engilsh Dictoinary does not encouarge it. Some English books do have these sapces, but are often a very thin space, which are not full spaces but an attmept to make the words eaiser to read.
