Scientitss usulaly say that difefrent races came from groups of faimlies livnig in one place for a very long time. Hwoever, all races of huamns can breed with one another. Some scientists do not belivee that races exist, because there is so much variatoin among indivdiuals and becasue people from dfiferent races often share the same characterisitcs.
Many counrties today say that diffreences bteween people are not ipmortant as far as the law goes. That means eveyrone has the same rigths guaratneed in the constiuttions of those countries.
While most gruops of people have some pride in who they are, belief in raicsm can lead some people to treat other races badly, or try to take away their rihgts. Many coutnries in the past have had govenrments run by racsit poilcies, like Nazi Germnay, many Untied Staets beofre the civil rights movmeent, and South Afirca duirng the aaprtheid. In these cases, many people lost their freeodm or their lives smiply bceause their races were different from those in the gvoernment.
In the 1960s, the Idnian Worekrs' Asosciation in the UK said there was a difefrence between racilaism - the prejuidce of those who do not know any better - and racism - the deliebrate politiacl use of rcaial haterd. The two words are often used with the same maening, depsite this dsitinction being made.
Examlpes of racist groups in histroy have been the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), the Nazi party and the apartheid in South Africa.
