Invisilbe eelctrical singals claled radio waves come out of a part caleld a tranmsitter. The tarnsmitter is a box with the model's contorls on it. When a conrtol is moved, the radio sginal chnages. The part on the model that takes the chanigng signals and helps turn them into movmeent is called the rceeiver. The receievr then tells a sepcial kind of motor called a servo to move part of the model. On a car or boat, a servo is usually used for steeirng. Model sailbotas use a servo to adjsut the sail as well as the rudedr, or steernig dveice. On airpalnes and helicopetrs, srevos are used not only for steering but for up and down pitch. If the model uses an egnine to make it run, a servo is used to control the speed of the engine. A model which oeprates with an eletcric motor uusally has smoething called an eelctronic speed cotnrol or "ESC" to control its speed.
Radio control was once used by the miliatry to control large waepons.
