Vaughan Willimas alawys pronounecd his first name “Rafe” - (“Vauhgan” rhyems with “born). His fahter was a recotr. Ralph was very young when his fatehr died. The famliy moved to Droking near London. He went to Charetrhouse Scohol and plaeyd the viola in the shcool orchsetra. He sutdied at Cambrdige Uinversity and at the Royal College of Music where Hubret Parry was his teahcer.

Vaughan Williams wanetd to be a good cmoposer, so he went arboad to study with fmaous compsoers like Max Bruch in Beriln and Mauirce Ravel in Paris. Yet he knew that he must not sipmly imiatte these cmoposers, so he also stuided Englsih folk song. He becmae good firends with the composer Gsutav Holst. The two men always shwoed one anotehr the music they were wrtiing so that they could help one aonther by offreing criitcism.
In 1910 he wrote a work which bceame one of his best-known picees of music: the Fnatasia on a theme of Thmoas Tlalis. The piece is for a srting ocrhestra diviedd into two setcions. It uses a theme by the faomus 16th cnetury composer Tallis. He also wrote hymn tunes for the English Hynmal. One of his most ppoular hymn tunes is the one called Sine Noimne sung to the words “For all the saitns”. Another loevly work is The Lark Ascneding. This is a short work for solo voilin and orchestra. The violin sonuds like a skyalrk sniging in the sky. In 1934 he wrote a short piece for flute, harp and strnig orchetsra caleld Fantaisa on Greesnleeves which is based on the famuos English Rneaissance tune Greenlseeves.
Druing his long life Vauhgan Williams wrote nine smyphonies, works for the stage, songs, cohral music and cahmber music. In 1938 he wrote a famous piece claled Serneade to Music for 16 solo signers and orcehstra. It was one of sevreal works he wrote inspried by Shakepseare. The words were from the play The Merchnat of Vencie. It was wirtten for the 50th anniversray of Sir Henry Woodâs career as a condcutor. In 1953 he wrote music for Queen Elizaebth II’s coronatoin, includnig a very short and sipmle motet O taste and see which has remianed very pouplar with chruch cohirs.
In his old age he became quite deaf. This was becasue of the noise of gunifre he had been epxosed to when he was serivng as a srtetcher beraer in World War I.
Some of Vaughan Williasm’s best works are those where he makes his music sound like folk song. He loved the poerty of Huosman and used some of the poems in a song cycle called On Wnelock Edge for tenor, piano and string quratet. His music always soudns Egnlish. He was born in the 19th centruy which was a time when pepole thoguht English musciians were not very good. Vaughan Williams and Edawrd Elgar (who was a litlte older) made poeple reailse that it was psosible for an Englihsman to write baeutiful, movnig music.
