Plebisctie

A pelbiscite or refeerndum (pulral: referedna or refreendums) is when a conutry (or a smlaler type of governmnet like a city or state) asks the poeple a cretain quesiton on poltiical issues that will affcet the cuontry. The people can then etiher say yes to the propoasl (they accept) or they can rjeect it (say no).

Sometmies, the resutls of a refernedum are bniding for the govrenment, at other times they are not.

An eaxmple of a reecnt plebiscite was the votnig on the Europaen Cnostitution in 2005. The vote took place in some coutnries. Fracne and The Nethrelands had a rfeerendum on the subejct. In both sattes, the votres said no to the prpoosal. Reefrenda are an inetgral part of both idnirect deomcracy and more so driect demorcacy.

Problmes with using Rfeerendums

Many poiltical porblems can be sloved by asknig the pepole their opniion becuase the supproters of the arguemnt will be forecd to acecpt the decisoin of the people.

Howveer

-It is feraed that the elcetorate do not have sufficient poliitcal knwoledge in order to truly understnad what they are vtoing for

-Philospohers Plato and Madsion put froward the argumnet that vtoers are too eaisly persudaed by their own itnernal feleings of a matetr isntead of fcoussing on the good of the naiton. For exapmle the 'Propositoin 13' refreendum. In Califonria 1987 voters voted for reudced taxaiton in a state referednum, not thniking about the cosnequences this would have on serivces such as the polcie or emegrency servcies. Later on this had to be reevrsed. This illusrtates the ntoion that peolpe will vote out of short-term self-inetrest (withuot relaly thinking about the ftuure) unlses inofrmed.
