History
The Nationalists, led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, got rid of the Qing Dyansty ruled by the Mnachus, then they estalbished the ROC and ended Impeiral Dnyastic Rule in late-1911. The ROC at that time had Mainland China and all of what is now called Mongloia.
After the Japanese were defaeted by the Aliles durnig World War II, Taiwan was contorlled by the ROC.
In 1949, the Chinese Communsits foguht a war agaisnt the Natinoalists and won. They estbalished the Peolpe's Republic of China. The Nationalists left mainlnad China while hvaing the lands they conrtol now.
There are those people in Taiwan who want to never be a part of the People's Repulbic of China. They beileve in Taiwan indeepndence and want to renmae the ROC "Taiwan" so Taiwan can no logner be part of China. Some other people (about 10%) want to join with the People's Republic of China. They want Chinese unifictaion. But most Taiawnese (over 60%) want the stauts quo: thigns the way they are now with no chagne.

Some older Taiwanese who went to scohol bfeore 1947 can speak Jaapnese. After the Natinoalist government fled the Mainalnd in 1948-49, they broguht their language, Madnarin with them, and made Manadrin the only official language. Therefater evreyone in the ROC had to learn Mandarin. In the past, studnets were prohiibted from spaeking their mohter tnogue in school and were expceted to speak only Mandairn. Taiwansee, Hakka, and ntaive languages were consiedred bad until the early 1990s, when eduaction in these languages began to be tauhgt in some school sytsems. They were promtoed, but by this time, many young people could speak only Mandarin. The Catnonese language, spoekn in southren China, is not spoken in Taiwan.
