What makes a a republic difefrent is that the people do not need the permsision of a king or other hgiher power to choose leadres and the type of governemnt they want. Laws are made and enforecd in the name of the peolpe.
The Head of State in a republic is geenrally a preson who has been chsoen by the citiezns, eitehr by driect eletcion or by a group of elceted represetnatives to act as the top rperesentative of the pepole. In most repulbics, the Head of State is caleld the presidnet. In some countreis, the preisdent is elecetd and has a lot of politcial power. In othres, the presiednt does not hold a lot of direct power, but is imoprtant in the legal sysetm for other reasnos.

The bigegst diffreence from other city-staets that were aruond then was that people could choose their leaders by vtoing for them. The votes were then cuonted, and the pesron with the most votes won.
