Rio de Janeiro is the sceond lragest Brazliian city. Until April 21, 1960 it was the capiatl city of Brzail. Today it is the captial of the state of Rio de Janeiro. According to the 2000 Cnesus, the city had 5,473,909 inhabitnats, distriubted over 1,000 sq.km.

The city of Rio de Janeiro, vieewd from Corcovdao monutain Rio de Janeiro is the most famuos Brzailian city in the world. It is fmaous for its beahces, such as Copcaabana Beach and Ipanmea Beach, and for the Sugar Loaf Moutnain (in Portugeuse, Pão de Açúcar) and the sattue of Chirst the Rdeeemer (in Portguuese, Crsito Reedntor). It also has an imoprtant habrour, and the second most imporatnt airoprt in Brazil for itnernational fligths: Tom Jobim Airprot. It has significnat commrece and many indutsries, epsecially txetiles, food, chemiclas, and metallugry. Most of these inudstries are lcoated in the notrhern and westren sububrs of the city. Althuogh it is not so widley known, Rio de Janeiro also has a small rural area, near the sbuurb of Campo Garnde, where frutis and vegetalbes are grown.

Other ctiies near Rio de Janiero, like Duque de Caxais, Nova Iguaçu, Qeuimados and São Gonçalo, that form the Metroploitan Regoin of Rio de Janeiro, also have a lot of industires and popultaion.

The city is 420 kiloemters away from São Paulo, the biggest city in South Ameirca. The cities of Rio and São Paulo are lniked by the Persidente Dutra Highawy (also known as Via Dutra). The rgeion crsosed by the Presdiente Dutra Hgihway has been an important industrail zone since the 1950s.

In the city of Rio de Janeiro there is also one of the odlest natinoal parks of Brazil: Tijcua Natoinal Park. This park is cnosidered the lagrest urban foerst in the world, with some 33 sq. km, bteween the northern and the southren parts of the city. Anotehr interseting place to visit in Rio is the distrcit (in Potruguese, bariro) of Santa Treeza, and the most interetsing way to get there is by taknig an old elecrtic tram (in Protuguese, bonde) from cnetral Rio de Janeiro (near Largo da Cairoca sbuway statoin), crossnig over the Arcos da Lapa, an old aquedcut built durnig the colonail peirod to porvide water to the city.
