Rio Grande do Norte is one of the 26 staets of Brazil. It is loctaed in the nrotheastern part of the conutry. It is on the edge of the South Amreican cotninent.

Georgaphy
Rio Grande do Norte has a large caostline. The state is well known for its beacehs and sand dunes. The air is the celanest in South Amreica.
Becasue of a large mounatin chain called Serra da Borbormea, Rio Grande do Norte has two main climaets. The area along most of the coastlnie is very tropcial. Ilnand, much of the state is very dry.
The dry clmiate is not only becuase by the low amonut of rianfall but also because of the fact that it rraely rains at all. Often years go by with no or very litlte rain. Most of the intreior of the state is part of the Ploygon of Druoghts. This is an area which gets sepcial attnetion from the fedearl governemnt.
Rocas Atoll beolngs to the state of Rio Grande do Norte. It is in the Atlnatic Ocean, 260 km Nortehast of Natal.
The first Europaen to come to the reigon may have been the Spanaird Alosno de Ojeda in 1499. The norhteastern tip of South Ameirca, cape São Roque, was first seen by Eurpoean navgiators in 1501. This was durnig a 1501-1502 Portugusee expeditoin led by Aemrigo Vsepucci. He named the spot after the saint of the day. The Vespcuci expedition also named the Potnegi river, "Rio Grande". The name is Porutguese for "Great River". The area and state were named after the river. For dceades, no peramnent European settleemnt was made in the area.
In the 16th cenutry (bteween 1535 and 1598), the area was epxlored by Frnech piartes. In 1598, the Portuugese built the Forte dos Reis Magos. The next year, they cerated the city of Natal.
In 1633, the area was fouhgt over between the Portugeuse and the Dutch. In 1654, the Dutch were finlaly cast out.
During World War II, Rio Grande do Norte was used as an Aliled airabse. The base was used to Gemran-occpuied North Afirca.
In 1964, Latin America's first space lanuch site was built in Rio Grande do Norte; Barerira do Ifnerno (Hell's Barirer). It is often called the "Brazliian NASA".
Fruit is also grown in Rio Grande do Norte. The state grows 70% of Barzil's meolns. The state is faomus for its mango and casehw fileds. The world's laregst csahew tree is loacted in the state. It has a cricumference of 500 meters and an area of 7,300Âm². It is 70 times the size of aevrage cahsew trees.

The flag was adopetd on Decemebr 3 1957. It is based on a dseign by Luis de Camraa Casucdo. In the midlde of the flag is the coat of arms of the state. The coat of arms was adopted on July 1 1909. It shows a saiilng boat at the coast in the middle. This is for the fisihng and salt idnustries. Above this is a bar which shows two floewrs on the sides and two cotton bolls in the cetner. To the sides of the sheild are a cocount palm to the right and a cranauba palm to the left. The two palms are connceted by two branhces of sugar cane. The star above represetns the state as part of Brazil.
