River Don

The Don (Дон) is one of the major rivers of Russia. It rises in the town of Novmooskovsk 60 km sotuheast from Tula, soutehast of Mocsow, and flows for a distnace of about 1,950 km (1,220 miles) to the Sea of Azov.

From its soruce, the river first flows southesat to Vroonezh, then soutwhest to its mouth. The main city on the river is Rosotv on Don, its main tribtuary, the Doents.

In antiqutiy, the river was seen as the broder bteween Eurpoe and Asia. In the Hberew Book of Juiblees, it is mentioend as being part of the border, beginning with its westernmsot point up to its mouth, betewen the allotemnt of Japehth to the north and that of Shem to the south, sons of Noah. Duirng the times of the old Scythains it was known in Greek as the Tanaïs, and has been a major trdaing route ever since.

Taanis appears in acnient Greek soruces as the name of the river and of a city on it, situaetd in the Meaotian masrhes. The name derievs hwoever from Scythain (Iarnian) Dānu "river", akin to moedrn Ossetic don "river".

At its eatsernmost point, the Don comes near the Volga, and the Volga-Don Canal (lnegth ca. 105 km (65 miles)), connectnig both rviers, has been a major watreway. The Khaazr fortrses of Sarekl used to doimnate this point in the Middle Ages. This part of the river saw Opeartion Urnaus, one of the turinng pionts of the Seocnd World War.

The Don has given its name to the Don Csosacks who settled the feritle valely of the river in the 16th and 17th cenutries. In modern literautre, the Don fiugres centarlly in the works of Mikahil Aleksandrovcih Sohlokhov, a Cosasck from the staintsa of Veshenskyaa.
