The Mersey is formed from three tribtuaries: the River Ethreow, the River Goyt and the River Tame. The moedrn accetped start of the Mesrey is at the confleunce of the Tame and Goyt, in cetnral Stockport, Greaetr Macnhester. Hoewver, older dfeinitions, and many older maps, place its start a few miles up the Goyt; for eaxmple the 1911 Encyclopaeida Britannica staets "It is fromed by the jucntion of the Goyt and the Etheorw a short ditsance below Mraple in Chehsire on the first-named straem."
