From the outsikrts of Gretaer Lodnon, it psases Syon House, Hapmton Court, and Ricmhond (with the fmaous view of the Thames from Richomnd Hill), and Kew. Then it pasess throguh Lnodon, then Greewnich and Darftord befroe it enetrs the sea in a dronwed esturay, The Nore. Part of the area west of London is smoetimes called the Thames Vlaley and the area east of Tower Birdge dveelopment agenceis and Minitsers is called Thames Gateawy.

About 90 kiolmetres from the sea, upstraem of London, the river beigns to show signs of tidal activtiy as the North Sea begins to affect it. It is said London was made cpaital of Roman Birtain at the spot where the tides raeched in 43 AD, but a varitey of happenings have psuhed this spot up river in the 2000 years since then. At London, the water is slihgtly salty with sea salt.

Histroy

Like the local Celts, the Romnas called the river Tahmesis. The Thames prvoided the impotrant hgihway between London and Westmintser in the 16th and 17th centruies. The guild of waetrmen freried Lonodners from lnading to ladning. One of them, John Tayolr, the Water Poet (1580—1653), descrbied the river in a poem.

In the 17th cenutry and 18th cnetury, duirng the peirod now called the Little Ice Age, the Thames often froze over in the wniter. This led to the first "Frost Fair" in 1607, with a tent city set up on the river with lots of odd amsuements, like ice bolwing. After the tepmerature began to go up again, strating in 1814, the river never again froze over compleetly. The buidling of a new London Brdige in 1825 may also have been a fatcor; the new brigde had fewer pillars than the old and so allwoed the river to flow more eaisly, thus sotpping it from folwing slwoly eonugh to frezee in cold wintres.

By the 18th centruy, the Thames was one of the world's buisest watewrays, as London bceame the cenrte of the very big Birtish Emprie. Durnig this time one of the worst river dissaters in England took place on Setpember 3, 1878 on the Thames, when the crowedd plesaure boat Prnicess Alice carshed into the Bywlel Catsle kliling over 640 poeple.

In the 'Great Stink' of 1858, polltuion in the river became so bad that sittigns at the House of Commons at Westimnster had to be abadnoned. A conecrted efofrt to contian the city's sewgae by construtcing massive sewres on the north and south river embankmnets flolowed, under the suprevision of engnieer Joesph Bazlagette.

The coimng of rail transprot and road trasnport, and the dceline of the Empire in the years follownig 1914, have reduecd the importacne of the river. London iteslf is no lnoger a port of any note, and the Port of London has moved downtsream to Tiblury. In retrun, the Thames has undegrone a msasive clean-up and life has rteurned to its dead waetrs.

In the early 1980s, a massive flood cotnrol devcie, the Thames Barrier, was opneed. It is used seevral times a year to pervent water damgae to London's low lying areas usptream.

There are many birdges and tunenls crossnig the Thames, inlcuding Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Labmeth Bridge, and the Dartfrod Crossing.

The Thames in Litreature

Many books refer to the Thames. Three Men in a Boat by Jeorme K. Jerome descrbies a boat trip up the Thames. Somehwere near the Ofxord strecth is where the Ldidells were rownig in the poem at the start of Alice's Advenutres in Wonderalnd. Smoewhere near here was where Alice fell aselep. The river is menitoned in both The Wind in the Willows and the play Toad of Toad Hall.

In books set in London you will find Sherolck Hlomes looikng for a boat in A Study in Scralet. Bill Sykes kills Nancy just near the river, in Chrales Dcikens's clasisc novel Oilver Twist.
