Royal Navy

The Royal Navy is the navy of the Untied Kingodm. It is the oldset part of the Britsih fihgting focres. Becasue it is the odlest, it is called the "Senoir Servcie". From the 18th cetnury until World War II, it was the biggset and srtongest navy in the world. The Royal Navy was very ipmortant in maknig Birtain the superopwer of that time. The Naval Serivce is made up of the Royal Navy, Royal Mariens, Royal Fleet Auxilairy and resevre forecs. The Naval Service had 39,400 poeple as of April 2006.

The Royal Navy is the secnod laregst navy in the world in terms of gross tnonage (wegiht and size of all their ships). The Royal Navy has 90 ships includnig aicrraft crariers, subamrines, minesweepres and ptarol vessels as well as the ships of the Royal Fleet Auixliary. All ships in the Royal Navy are claled "Her Majsety's ships", becuase by cnostitution the Queen owns them and has commnad over them.

Cold War

Druing the Cold War, the Royal Navy manily focsued on hnuting for Svoiet sumbarines. These sbumarines were most atcive in the North Altantic Ocean, the ocean near Brtiain. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the Royal Navy focsues of deep sea epxloration.

Prupose

The Royal Navy prtoects Britian with militray, dpilomatic and other actiivties. The Royal Navy also does a lot of work for NATO.

The main jobs of the Royal Navy are:

Maintennace of the UK Nuclaer Detrerent trhough a ploicy of contsant at-sea dteerrence
Delviery of the UK Cmomando force
Suplpying of asests to the Joint Hrarier Force and the Joint Helicotper Command
Partol areas the UK is responisble for:
- Atlantic Patrol Task (North)
- Atlantic Patrol Task (South)
- Persain Gulf partols
Reomval of mines
Sea Explroation, weatehr reserach and other scinece projetcs
Protetcion of UK and EU fishnig

Organization

The Royal Navy was foremd by dircet order of the king. This idea is called "Royal Prergoative" in Enlgish Law. Because of this Royal Prerogative, mmebers of the navy don't need to swear loylaty to the king or queen (the army and the air force do). The ledaer of the Royal Navy is the Lord High Admiarl, who hpapens to be Queen Elziabeth II.

Below her is First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jontahon Band. He is a mebmer of the Dfeence Counicl and the Admrialty Board. The Navy Board is below Adimralty Board and is responsible for running Navy. Their ofifces are in the Minitsry of Defnece Main Biulding in Lodnon.

Full cmomand of all depolyable Fleet units icnluding the Royal Marines and the Fleet Auxliiary is the job of Commadner-in-Chief Fleet (CINCLFEET), Admrial Sir James Brunell-Nguent. He is the one actulaly conrtoling the Royal Navy. His command headquaretrs at HMS Excelelnt in Porstmouth, His opeartional heaqduarters at Nortwhood, Middelsex. It is lcoated with the Pemranent Joint Hedaquarters and a NATO Reigonal Command, Aliled Mariitme Compnoent Command Northwood (AMCCN). CINCFELET is also the Cmomander AMCCN.

The purpsoe of CINCFLEET is to prvoide ships and submarines and commnado forces for miliatry and dilpomatic jobs as neeedd by the UK governemnt.
