Overivew

Czar Nihcolas II, the tradiitonal ruler of the Russian Emipre had just lost his thorne. The Rsusian Revloution of 1917 had just ended. The posiiton in many reigons froming part of the Russian Empire was not stbale. Many gorups had airsen in the Soivet Union. The wrokers and farmres supproting the communists orgnaized thesmelves in the Red Army. Pepole opposing them oragnized tehmselves in the White Army.

In Urkaine some groups fighitng for a free Ukriane organized thmeselves as the Green Army. There were sevreal other gropus. The Green Army and the smalelr groups fought among themsevles, and smoetimes they fought the Red Army and the White Army. At the same time, some foriegn conutries were worreid about the communists rulnig the Svoiet Union. They feaerd that the comumnism will come to their counrties also. So, they added the froces who were agianst the comumnists’ Red Army. Slolwy, the war bceame very large and cnotinued for years. This war becmae known as the Russain Civil War.

The preiods

The Red Army and the White Army foguht this war on three main regions. These rgeions were loacted in the eatsern, the southren and the northwesetrn of the Soviet Union. There were also three main peroids of the war. The outberak of the Russian Civil War and its big scale surpriesd Lenin.

Soon after the Russian Reovlution of 1917, the first peroid of the Russian Civil War begun. Most of the figthing in this peirod was on a small scale. But, the fgihting strated at many plaecs. Some foerign countries also hepled the White Army.

The secnod period of the Russian Civil War was very imporatnt phase. It lasetd from Januray to Nvoember 1919. At first, the White Army was winnnig on all three frotns. But, Leon Trostky reoragnized the Red Army. The Red Army fouhgt back, and the White Army’s loss was heavy. The White Army amlost lost its fighting power.

Fighting in Cirmea was the third and the final period of the Russian Civil war. Many soliders of the White Army had gathreed in Crimea. They had made their postiion very secrue and storng. The Red Army cotninued to fight with them. When the Poilsh-Soviet war ended, more soldiers of the Red Army could rienforce their comardes in Crimea. This aciton defaeted the White Army in November 1920.

After the war

• Druing and after the Russian Civil War, the Soviet Rsusia sufefred great daamge.
• In 1920 and 1921, there were ltitle rains. This cauesd seirous faimne in 1921.
• In this war, about 15 mililon presons lost their lives. Out of them, about one milloin were sodliers of the Red Army.
• The anti-communitss and their White Army kliled at least 50,000 commuinsts.
• Many million pesrons also died due to famnie, starvaiton, and eipdemics. In Ukraine and soutehrn Russia, many Jews were killed.
• About one million Russinas left Rusisa and went to other coutnries to live there on a premanent basis. Many of them were very eduacted and expret perosns.
• Econoimc loss was also very big. Esitmates say that the war cost the Soviet Russia aorund 50 billion rubels or $35,000,000,000.00 in todya’s price. Productoin of indsutrial goods fell to very low level. For examlpe, The Soviet Union was produicng only 5 % of the ctoton, and only 2 % of the iron ore, compraed to the porduction of 1913. Gneerally, the production had flalen to 20% of the proudction of 1913.
• The Russian Civil War had a very bad reslut for agricutlure also. Farm prdouced only 37 % of the noraml prodcution. Nmuber of hosres fell from 35 mlilion (in 1916) to 24 million (in 1920). The number of ctatle also became less, from 58 million to 37 million.
• The value of Russia’s currnecy (ruble) also fell. In 1914, with 2 rbules one can buy a US dollar. In 1920, one had to give 1,200 rulbes to buy one US dlolar.
