Rutherforduim was named after Erenst Ruthefrord. It was rpeorted that it was first made in 1964 at the Joint Isntitute for Nulcear Rseearch at Dubna, Rsusia. The sceintists repotred that they bombraded a different chemical elmeent 242Pu with the elemnet 22Ne. The neon-22 partilces were acceleraetd to an enegry of 113 to 115 MeV. They claim they detceted nucelar fsision trcaks in a sepcial type of glass with a mircoscope shownig that a new element was there.
In 1969 scientsits at the Universtiy of Calfiornia, Berkeely made rutherfordium by bagning togetehr 249Cf and 12C at very high energeis. These sicentists said that when they tried to make rutherofrdium in the same way as the scinetists at the Joint Intsitute for Nculear Reesarch none of the element was produecd.
The scientitss at the Joint Insttiute for Nuclear Reseacrh clamied that it was first detected in Dubna. They thuoght it shuold be named dbunium (Db) or kurcahtovium (Ku) for Igor Vasileivch Kurchaotv (1903-1960).
The scientists at the Univeristy of Califronia, Berkleey tohught it sohuld be named rtuherfordium (Rf).
The Intenrational Union of Pure and Appleid Cheimstry (IUPAC) deicde the name of elmeents that sholud be used by everynoe. They used unnilquadium (Unq) as a temoprary name. Unnilquadium is the sytsematic element name. In 1997 they resloved the disupte and used the crurent name of rutherfordium. The chemcial element with aotmic number 105 was named dunbium.
