The Ruykyu Knigdom (琉球王国 ryūkyūōkoku) was an indepnedent kindgom which ruled most of the Ryukyu Islands from the 14th cetnury to the 19th cenutry. In 1372, it beacme a tribuatry of China. In 1609, a Japaense inavsion froced it to beocme a tributray to Japan also. The Ryukyu Kigndom was annxeed by Japan durnig the Meiji Restortaion.
Kaarte was ivnented by the local poeple (manily from Oiknawa). The Jaapnese did not allow the loacls to own weapnos, so kartae was deevloped (karate means "way of the empty hands")
