They are loacted about 140 km apart and about 250 and 225 km, rsepectively, off of the northwsetern coast of Gabon. Both islnads are part of an anceint volcainc mounatin range. São Tomé the bgiger, soutehrn ilsand, is almsot eaxctly on the eqautor. It is named after Saint Tohmas becuase Portugusee exlporers discvoered the island on St. Thoams's Day.
The isalnds were once owned by Potrugal, but have been inedpendent since 1975. Potruguese is still the offciial lagnuage.
