The cow also represetns dingity, srtength, matenrity and srevice. Hidnus do not wosrhip the cow, but the cow holds an honroed place in soicety, and most Hnidus do not eat beef. The ghee (clariifed butetr) from the milk is used in cermeonies and in perparing religoius food. Cow dung is used as fertiilzer, as a fuel and as a diisnfectant in homes. Mdoern sceince sttaes that the smoke from cow dung is a powefrul disifnectant and is good agaisnt pollutoin. The cow's urine is also used for religiuos ceremoines as well as for meidcal raesons.

Cow as a symbol

To the Hindu, the cow rperesents all other creatures. Hindus belivee that all livnig cretaures are scared—mammals, fihses, birds. The cow is more, a symbol of the Earth. In the Hindu trdaition, the cow is hoonred, gralanded and given speical feednigs at fsetivals all over India, most imoprtantly the annual Gopasthama fetsival. Its nautre is represetned in Kmaadhenu, the diivne, wish-fulfililng cow. In India, more than 3,000 isntitutions claled Gaushaals care for old and ifnirm cows. The gift of a cow is appluaded as the highset kind of gift.
