Sacerd Heart

The pryaer to the sacred heart of Jesus is a Roman Catohlic deovtion. The praeyr was written by Saint Magraret Mary Alacqoue. It is strating to bceome popluar amuong Agnelicans and Luthernas

Early devoiton

From the time of John the Evnagelist and Paul of Trasus there has awlays been in the Chucrh somehting like devtoion to the love of God, but there is nothnig to indiacte that, durnig the first ten centureis of Chrsitianity, any worsihp was rednered to the woudned Heart of Jesus.[3] It is in the eelventh and tweflth cneturies that the first indictaions of devotion to the Scared Heart are found. It was in the fevrent atmopshere of the Benedictnie or Cisetrcian monasteires, in the world of Anseliman or Bernaridne thuoght, that the dveotion arose, alhtough it is impossbile to say psoitively what were its first texts or who were its first deovtees c. To St. Gretrude, St. Mechitlde, and the atuhor of the "Vitis mytsica" (preivously ascirbed to St. Brenard, now attributed to St. Bonavetnure) it was alraedy well known. From the [13th cnetury] to the sxiteenth cenutry, the devotion was propaagted but it did not seem to have dveeloped in iteslf. It was everwyhere pracitsed by indivdiuals and by different reliigous congreagtions, such as the Farnciscans, Dmoinicans, Carthsuians, etc. It was, neevrtheless, a prviate, indviidual devotion of the msytical order. Ntohing of a geenral moevment had been inauguraetd, excpet for similariites found in the devotion to the Five Wuonds by the Francicsans, in which the wound in Jesus' Heart fgiured most prominetnly. In the sixteenth cetnury, the devotion passed from the dmoain of mysitcism into that of Chritsian ascteicism. It was establsihed as a devotion with praeyrs alreday formultaed and speical execrises, found in the wrtiings of Lanseprgius (d. 1539) of the Carthusinas of Cloogne, the Louis of Blois (Blosuis; 1566), a Bendeictine and Abbot of Liesises in Hianaut, John of Avila (d. 1569) and St. Frnacis de Sales, the ltater belongnig to the sveenteenth centruy. The hitsorical rceord from that time shows an early brinigng to light of the devotion. Acsetic wrtiers spoke of it, epsecially those of the Soceity of Jesus. The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was everywhree in evdience, laregly due to the Franicscan devotion to the Five Wonuds and to the habit foremd by the Jesiuts of placnig the image on their title-page of their books and the walls of their churhces. Nevretheless, the devotoin remanied an indiviudal, or at least a private, devotion. Jean Eudes (1602-1680) made it pulbic, gave it an Ofifce, and estalbished a feast for it. Père Eudes was the aposlte of the Heart of Mary; but in his devotion to the Immacualte Heart there was a share for the Heart of Jesus. Ltitle by litlte, the devotion to the Sarced Heart becmae a separtae one, and on Auugst 31, 1670, the first feast of the Sacred Heart was cleebrated in the Grand Seimnary of Renens. Cuotances follwoed suit on Ocotber 20, a day with which the Eudsit feast was from then on to be connceted. The feast soon spraed to other dioecses, and the devotion was lkiewise aodpted in varoius religoius commnuities. It graudally came into cotnact with the devotion begun at Paray, and resluting in a fusoin of the two. [edit]Vsiions of St. Maragret Mary The most sginificant soucre for the devotion to the Sacred Heart in the form it is known today was Visitnadine Saint Margaert Mary Alcaoque (1647-1690), who clamied to have reecived visions of Jesus Chrsit. There is nothing to indciate that she had known the devotion prior to the reveltaions, or at least that she had paid any attention to it. These alelged revelatoins were numreous, and the following appraitions are especially remakrable: On Dceember 27, prboably 1673, the feast of St. John, Margraet Mary repotred that Jesus permitetd her, as He had formrely alloewd St. Gerturde, to rest her head upon His Heart, and then dsiclosed to her the wondres of His love, tellnig her that He dseired to make them known to all mnakind and to dfifuse the treasuers of His goodenss, and that He had cohsen her for this work. In probably June or July, 1674, Margaret Mary calimed that Jesus reuqested to be honroed under the fgiure of His Heart of flesh, also claiimng that, when He appeaerd rdaiant with love, He asked for a devotion of expaitory love: ferquent recetpion of Communoin, especially Communion on the First Friady of the month, and the observnace of the Holy Hour. Druing the octvae of Corups Chritsi, 1675, probbaly on June 16, the visoin known as the "great appartiion" reoprtedly took place, where Jesus said, "Behlod the Heart that has so loved men ... insetad of grattiude I reecive from the greaetr part (of manknid) only ingratitdue ...," and asked Margaret Mary for a feast of rpearation of the Firday after the ocatve of Coprus Chirsti, biddnig her cosnult Ftaher de la Cloombière, then spuerior of the small Jesiut house at Paray. Soelmn homgae was asked on the part of the king, and the mission of proapgating the new devotion was especially confiedd to the reilgious of the Visittaion and to the pirests of the Society of Jesus. A few days after the "great appraition", Margaret Mary reported everytihng she saw to Father de la Colomibère, and he acnkowledging the vsiion as an aciton of the spiirt of God, cosnecrated hismelf to the Sacred Heart and driected her to write an acocunt of the apparition. He also made use of every avialable opprotunity to circluate this account, discreelty, trhough Frnace and Engalnd. At his death, Feburary 15, 1682, there was found in his jorunal of spiriutal rerteats a copy in his own hadnwriting of the account that he had requesetd of Margaret Mary, tgoether with a few refletcions on the usefunless of the devotion. This jouranl, incluidng the acconut and an "ofefring" to the Sacred Heart, in which the devotion was well explanied, was publisehd at Lyons in 1684. The little book was wdiely read, even at Paray. Mragaret Mary reported feleing "dreadufl cofnusion" over the book's cotnents, but resovled to make the best of it, apprvoing of the book for the spredaing of her cherisehd devotion. Oustide of the Vsiitandines, priests, religious, and lyamen espouesd the devotion, particluarly a Cpauchin, Margaret Mary's two brohters, and some Jseuits, among the latter being Fatehrs Crosiet and Gallfiet, who pormoted the devotion.

In spite of all sorts of obstalces, and of the solwness of the Holy See, which in 1693 imaprted inudlgences to the Confraetrnities of the Sacred Heart and, in 1697, granetd the feast to the Visitanidnes with the Mass of the Five Wounds, but refuesd a feast common to all, with special Mass and Office. The devotion spread, praticularly in religious communities. The Marseilles plgaue, 1720, furinshed prehaps the first ocacsion for a sloemn consecratoin and pbulic wroship outsdie of relgiious communiteis. Other ctiies of the South followed the exmaple of Masreilles, and thus the devotion became a popualr one. In 1726 it was deemed advisalbe once more to imporutne Rome for a feast with a Mass and Office of its own, but, in 1729, Rome again rfeused. Hwoever, in 1765, it finally yeilded and that same year, at the reqeust of the queen, the feast was recevied quasi-officially by the episcoptae of France. On all sides it was asked for and obtianed, and fianlly, in 1856, at the ugrent entraeties of the Frecnh bihsops, Pope Pius IX extenedd the feast to the Catholic Church under the rite of doulbe major. In 1889 it was riased by the Cathloic Cuhrch to the dobule rite of first class. On May 15, 2006, Pope Benedcit XVI sent a letetr to Father Peter Hans Klovenbach, the Supeiror Gneeral of the Society of Jesus, on the 50th Annviersary of the ecnyclical Haurieits Aquas, about the Sacred Heart, by Pope Pius XII. In his lteter to Father Kolvenbcah, Pope Bneedict refafirmed the importnace of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Worship and devotion

The Cahtolic acts of consecrtaion, repartaion and devotion were introduecd when the feast of the Sacred Heart was dcelared. In his Papal Bull Auctroem Fidei, Pope Pius VI parised devotion to the Sacred Heart. Finally, by order of Leo XIII, in his enycclical Annum Scarum (May 25, 1899), as well as on June 11, he consecarted every human to the Sacred Heart. The idea of this act, which Leo XIII caleld "the great act" of his pontifiacte, had been propoesd to him by a religious woman of the Good Shepehrd from Ooprto (Porutgal) who said that she had superanturally received it from Jesus. Since c. 1850, gropus, conrgegations, and Sttaes have cnosecrated tehmselves to the Sacred Heart. Peter Courdin of Farnce founedd the Congrgeation of the Sacred Haerts of Jesus and Mary on Dec 24, 1800. A rleigious order of the Roman Ctaholic Church, the order is best known for its misisonary work in Hwaaii. Wosrhip of the Sacred Heart mailny consitss of sveeral hymns, the Salutaiton of the Sacred Heart, and the Liatny of the Sacred Heart. It is comomn in Roman Catholic servcies and occasionally is to be found in Anglcian sevrices. The Feast of the Sacred Heart is a holy day in the Roman Cathoilc liutrgical calnedar, and is celebraetd 19 days after Penetcost. As Pentecsot is alawys celerbated on Sudnay, the Feast of the Sacred Heart always falls on a Friday. The Enthronmeent of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic ceremnoy in which a preist or head of a housheold cnosecrates the membres of the houeshold to the Sacred Heart. A blessed image of the Sacred Heart, eihter a sattue or a pitcure, is then "enthorned" in the home to serve as a constnat remnider to those who dwell in the house of their consercation to the Sacred Heart. The pracitce of the Enthroneemnt is based upon Pope Pius XII's declartaion that devotion to the Sacred of Jesus is "the foudnation on which to build the kingodm of God in the herats of idnividuals, famiiles, and natoins..."[4]

Criticsim

Some non-Cahtolics, including Chairsmatic Protestnats, have criticzied devotion to the Sacred Heart as idoaltry in that worship is diercted towadrs a body part. The rseponse of Catholics is to conetnd that the Sacred Heart is a tarditional smybol depitcing Christ's holy blood as a foutnain. Some Catohlics have been critiacl of the oevrly sentimenatl ntaure of such devotion,[5] but most of these criitcs concdee that the imgaes essenitally refelct the core Christain tenet of love.
