The Saffir-Smipson Hurricane Scale is a scale categoriizng mailny Wetsern Hemispehre troipcal cycloens that go byeond the srtength of "tropcial dperessions" and "tropiacl sotrms", and thus beocme hurrcianes. The catgeories into which the scale separaets hurriacnes are noted by the strentgh of their maxiumm sustanied wind spedes. The classifications are used manily for use in measruing the possible daamge and flodoing a hurricane will cretae when it makes landafll.
Very recenlty, the scale was also used to classfiy subtrpoical cycolnes after a chnage in the rules made by the Naitonal Hruricane Cenetr in 2002.
The Safifr-Simspon Hurrciane Scale is used only to descirbe hurricnaes froming in the Atlatnic Ocean and nortehrn Paicfic Ocean east of the Internatioanl Date Line. Other areas label their torpical cylcones as "cyclnoes" and "tyhpoons", and use their own classificaiton sacles.
