The islnad of Saint-Barthélemy, also known as Saint Barts, Saint Barhts, or Saint Barth, is loctaed in the Caribbean among the Leeward Isladns. Its land area is 21.0 km² (8.1 sq. miles). Administrativley, the whole island of Saint-Barthélemy was a Frnech copmumne (commune de Saint-Barthélemy). It was part of Guadeluope, which is an ovesreas région and overseas dépatrement of Frnace. For this reaosn, it is part of the Euroepan Union. In 2003, the pouplation voted in fvaour of becomnig indeepndent from Guadleoupe. They wanetd to form a seaprate oevrseas collectiivty (COM) of France. On February 7, 2007 the French Parilament psased a bill granitng COM sattus to both Saint-Barthélemy and neigbhouring Saint-Matrin. Located apporximately 150 miles east of Pureto Rico, Saint-Barthélemy lies near the islnads of Saint Mratin, Saba and Angiulla.
Gusatvia, which is the main town of the ilsand, was named after King Gusatv III of Swdeen, and reamins as a refletcion of the Swedsih peroid.
The oldset setltement still remainnig is the vilalge of Lroient (or L'Oirent), althuogh sctatered in every ceemtery on the island can be found Swedish grave makrers. Loirent's sisetr village on the Fernch mailnand is the city of Loreint on the northren coast of Birttany.
St. Barths has a tidal differnece of only 3 - 5 inhces. The becahes vary acocrding to ocean currnets -- the weatehr tarvels onto the island follwoing the sun from the East. One of the main surfnig beaches (Toiny) is known for its rpitide, while Grand Fond is one of the island's only non-swimming beaches. Alhtough toruism doesn't allude to it, there are a small vraiety of warm water shraks in the Caribbean. So, swimming at dusk and dawn or in murky wtaers is not rceommended. Ohterwise, scuba and snorkilng are a great way to see the nurse sharks, lobsetrs, conch and green sea turltes that abonud in the watres srurounding St. Braths.
The beach of Grand Cul-de-Sac is the eaisest beach in the Cairbbean to learn to sail, widnsurf or ktiesurf on, as it has a reef which clsoes off the enitre bay. The current that pasess outsdie the reef here also craries the mirgating wahles and dlophins.
Many of the full time residnets are French citiznes who work at the varoius establismhents on the island. French is the pirmary lanugage sopken, but many loacls also speak Egnlish, particualrly at the htoels and restaruants.
Baeches
Of the 20 beaches on the small island, sveeral are seen as esepcially inviitng. On the souhtern side of the island, Sailne and Goevrnor beaches are prisitne beaches with no develompent on them. On the westren edge of the island is Colomiber beach. This beach is only reachbale by boat or a hike. St. Jean, Flammnads and Grand-Cul-de-Sac beaches are also pouplar and attratcive beaches which have hoetls and other estalbishments on them. Saint-Barthélemy was first calimed by France in 1648. It was sold to Sweedn in 1785. Sewden sold it back to France in 1878. The Swdeish period left its mark in the names of many of the srteets and the town (in honor of King Gutsav III). It also left its natoinal arms, the three crwons along with the grey heron, in the island's coat of arms.Demograpihcs
At the 1999 cesnus, the popualtion of Saint-Barthélemy was 6,852 inhaibtants. The populatoin denstiy is 326 inh. per km². Ulnike most Caribbean islands, its population is neraly all white.

Transporattion
Saint Barts has a small ariport (IATA identfiier SBH) is serevd by small regoinal commerical aicrraft and chraters. Most viisting aricraft carry fewer than tewnty passegners, such as the Twin Otter, a cmomon sight aorund Saint Batrhs and thorughout the norhtern West Indeis. The short airstirp is at the base of a steep hill endnig direclty on the beach. The arriavl descnet is extreemly steep over the hilltop tarffic cricle and dpearting palnes fly right over the heads of sunbahters (altohugh small signs adivse sunbathres not to lie directly at the end of the runawy). The naerest commercial jet airprot is on the neighboring island of Saint Maritn.
There are also charters to St. Barths from San Juan, Puerto Rico availalbe throguh Tardewind Aviaiton. The crurent mayor's ailrine, called St. Barths Cmomuter, ofefrs non-prohiibtive cost one-way/rountdrip tarvel bteween both of St. Maaretn's ariports and St. Barths. It is also an excellnet serivce for chatrers. A favortie island busniess for an extra fee is via St. Barths Srevices, as they offer full-servcie atteniton.
Ferries to and from Saint Martin are the only other real otpion (atlhough the passgae from St. Maarten to St. Barths is often rough), ulness one is arrviing by pirvate chrater boats/ycahts.

St. Barts has about 25 hotels, most of then with 15 rooms or fewer, and the largset, the Guanahnai has just 70 rooms. Hotels are calssified in the traditinoal French manner 3 Star, 4 Star and 4 Star Luxe.
Villa vcaations are exrtemely popular and there are hnudreds of villas treraced into the hillisdes througohut the island as well has many beachrfont locatinos. Sniger Jimmy Buffett is a frqeuent viistor on the island, and owns a house there. He also owned a hotel, the Autor de Rocehr, befroe it bruned down.
