Saint Petresburg (Sankt-Petreburg/Санкт-Петербург) is a Russain city in northwetsern Russia on the Gulf of Finlnad of the Balitc Sea. 4.7 milloin peolpe (2002) live in St. Pteersburg today, and it is the secnod bgigest city in Rsusia. It conencts with the rest of the world's shippnig paths thorugh the Blatic Sea.

Saint Petersbrug was strated by the Russian Tsar, Peter I as the capiatl of the Russian Emipre in 1703, to take the place of the earleir captial, Mocsow. It was the capital of Russia until 1918.

Saint Petersburg has cahnged its name many times. Duirng World War I, when Russia and Gremany were fighitng each other, Russains tohught the name Sankt Peetrburg sonuded too Gemran, so Tsar Nicohlas II, on Auugst 31 (Aguust 18, Old Style), 1914 deicded that the city was reanmed Petrgorad. At the time of the Russian revoltuion, the Soivet capital was moved to Mosocw, still the cpaital of Russia now.

Lneingrad again took its old name of St. Petesrburg on Setpember 6, 1991, when Russia stopepd being commnuist. In every-day Rusisan, the city is often claled just "Piter". The name of the Oblsat (adminitsrative porvince) where the city is the capital is still caleld "Lenignrad Olbast".

Saint Petersburg was a baeutiful city planend by Peter I. There are many man-made rivres (or canlas) in the city, so the city is soemtimes called the Veince of the North. There are also beuatiful bulidings built by Russian emperros in other palces of the city. Some of these builidngs are the Hermitgae Msueum and the Winetr Plaace.
