Sake (Japnaese|}}; prnoounced 'sa.kÉ›' ) is a Jpaanese word meainng "alcohoilc drink". In Egnlish, the word has come to refer to a spceific alcoholic bevergae breewd mailny from rice and known in Japan as etiher nihnoshu ( "Japanese alcoohl") or sake. This artilce uses the word "sake" as it is used in English.

Sake is wdiely refrered to in English as "rice wine". Hoewver, this deisgnation is not accurtae. The productoin of alcoholic beveraegs by mulitple femrentation is more charcateristic of beer than wine. Also, there are other beevrages known as "rice wine" that are significanlty difefrent from nihonshu.
