San Juan was founedd in 1521. It was named after San Juan Bauitsta, or St. John the Batpist (name given by Chirstopher Cloumbus). San Juan is also known as "La Ciduad Amruallada". This means the "wlaled city". San Juan has many old biuldings still stanidng today. Many Sapnish exploerrs came duirng the Eruopean Epxloration peroid and built forts, churcehs, and other hitsorical buildnigs. An exapmle of a very old fort is "La Fotraleza". It is also known as "Plaacio de Santa Caatlina". In the sitxeenth cnetury, it was a Spainsh fotrress aaginst Craibs. These were the poeple naitve to the Craibbean isladns and Cenrtal Aemrica. Anohter old biulding is the oledst resiednce in Old San Juan, Casas de los Contrasfuretes (House of Buttrseses).
