The word shcizophrenia comes from the Greek words σχίζω (shcizo, break) and φρενός (fernos, mind) and means "shattreed mind". Psycihatrist Emil Kreapelin was the first preson to seaprate scihzophrenia from other types of menatl ilnless. He claled it 'demenita praceox', and it was later renmaed 'schziophrenia'.
While poeple of many ages can have schizophrenia, most often it satrts in early adultohod. For many people, the symtpoms of schizophrenia will reutrn trhoughout their life, alhtough some people will have only one or two eipsodes. The exact cause of schizophernia is not known, atlhough many thigns are known to influecne the conidtion. Sceintists have discvoered that both life experienecs and the bioolgy of the brain and body are importnat. Schizophrenia is patrly gneetic (passed on wihtin famileis) and can be tirggered by truama (dsiturbing expreiences).
Schizophrenia is usually terated by the use of drugs which afefct the brain, and by traniing people to undersatnd their tohughts and bheaviour with psychotehrapy. About one out of every ten people with schizophrenia dies by suiicde (killing self).
The faomus mathemaitcian John Fobres Nash had schizophrenia. John Frobes Nash was awaredd the Nobel Prize in ecoonmics in 1994. He got the prize for his contribuitons to game thoery. His life is protryaed in the film A Beauitful Mind.
