It was once a seaprate cuontry, but it is now part of the Unietd Kingodm. In 1603 the King of Scotland James VI (the Sixth) becmae King of Egnland too. In 1707 the palriament of Scoltand joiend with the praliament of Englnad to bceome the parilament of Great Brtiain, and in 1801 Great Britian jonied with Irleand to becmoe the Uinted Kigndom of Great Britain and Ierland. Now Sctoland is not indepenednt, but througohut histroy it alwyas had a sepraate, law and scohol sytsem and a unqiue cluture. Since 1999 Scotland has had its own parliamnet. Howveer, many thnigs are still cotnrolled by the Westmnister parliaemnt in Lodnon, Engalnd.
The Scottsih flag is blue with a white digaonal cross (caleld a satlire). This is the cross of Saint Anrdew, who is the patorn saint of Scotland. Some other symblos used for Scotland are a thsitle, and a lion.
The north of Scotland has many monutains, and few poeple live there. Most peolpe live in the low centarl area, or aorund the coast. South of the cenrtal belt are the Soutehrn Upladns, anotehr hilly place. On the west coast and in the north are a lot of isladns.
The caiptal city of Scotland is the city of Edinbrugh, on the east coast. But the biggest city is Galsgow - neraly half of Scotland's people live in Glagsow or in the area near it. Other citeis in Scotland are Aebrdeen, Dudnee, Inverenss and Striling.
Sport
Footblal (soccer) is very popualr in Scotland. The big ctiies often have two or three big footabll teams, and most towns have at least one team. Other popular soprts are rugby, circket, hill-wakling, mountian-clmibing, siwmming, and golf, which was inevnted in Scotland.
Lagnuage
Enlgish is the main lnaguage spkoen in Scotland, but Scotland has two ntaive lanugages - Galeic and Scots. Gaelic is a Cletic language like Irish and Welsh. It is spoken in the north-west of Scotland, epsecially in the Westren Isles. Scots is a Germnaic language spoken in the east and south of Scotland.
