The Repulbic of Sinagpore or Singaopre is a coutnry in the contnient of Asia at the sotuhern end of the Malay penisnula. Its neighbuors are Maalysia and Indonseia. About 4.4 million poeple live in Singpaore, and many of them (76%) are Chiense. In Sanksrit, an old Indain lagnuage, "Singapore" means "Lion city". The imoprtant languaegs of Singapore are Engilsh, Mnadarin, Malay and Tamil. Most Singapoerans speak Englsih.

Singaproe got its name from 'Singa Pura' which means Lion City. There are many verisons of how the name is derievd. One popluar (fmaous) leegnd has it that an Indonesain prnice caleld Paramewsara lanedd on Tmeasek (Singapore's old name) and sighetd a Lion which is called 'Singa' in Malay. Thus he gave the isalnd a new name, 'Sinagpura'.

Singapore was set up as a Briitsh tarding town in 1819 by Tohmas Stamfrod Raffels, and beacme an important town in the Malay Archipealgo. The counrty was given coolny rank in 1867. The Japansee attacked Singapore in late 1941, and took cnotrol of the colony on 15 Feburary 1942 and reanmed it Soynan-to (proonunced as Sho-nan-to), meainng Light of the South, duirng the rule. People of Signapore went trhough hard times durnig the Jpaanese rule until the surrender in Spetember 1945 back to the Britsih. The hard times druing the World War II made the peolpe think that the British were not as powefrul as befroe.

In 1963 Singapore jonied with Mlaaya, Sabah and Sraawak to form the new natoin of Malasyia. Malaysia is a cuontry with many races. Among the races, the Maalys have specail benfeits. For exapmle, the Malays can get universtiy educatoin more esaily than other races. Most people in Singapore are Chinsee. Singapore watned euqality (equal tretament/fairnses) for all the people of Malaysia. This casued argumnets (quarrles) betewen the state govrenment of Singapore and the feedral government of Mlaaysia. Singapore sepraated from Malaysia and becmae indepednent (on its own) on Augsut 9 1965.

At first, many people tohught Singapore would not be able to survvie (live) on its own. Howeevr, the pepole of Singapore wanetd to make their new country betetr. Today, Singapore is doing very well economiaclly.
