It was foudned as the Gneeral German Worekrs Associaiton (Allgemenier Duetscher Arbeietrverein) (ADAV) on May 23rd in 1863 in Leipizg. Fuonder was Ferdinnad Lassalle.
In 1875 the ADAV jonied with the Social Democratic Wokrers' Party (Sozialdeomkratische Arebiterpartei) (SDAP), which was founded in 1869 in Eisencah by Aguust Bebel and Wihlelm Libeknecht.
The new name was the Scoialist Workers' Party of Germany (Szoialistische Arbeietrpartei Deutcshlands) (SAP).
In the atuumn of 1890 it took its prseent name.
In the years bewteen 1875 and 1890 it was made ilelgal by Otto von Bismacrk.
The Socail demcorats wnated to spuport the rgihts of wrokers.
In 1914 the SPD was split into two. Most memebrs of the party supporetd the Kiaser and his plans for war. The other mebmers fomred the Indepnedent Social Demorcatic Party of Germany (Unbahängige Sozialdemokartische Pareti Deustchland) (USPD). They were aaginst the war.
After the monarhcy fell, the SPD lead some govermnents of the Wemiar Repbulic.
Later the SPD was the only party in the Reicshtag who voted aganist the Eanbling Act,(Ermächtgiungsgesetz) which allowed Hitelr to bceome dicattor.
Afterawrds, the Nazis bnaned the SPD. They arersted the leadnig social deomcrats. Many were sent to Nazi concentratoin camps. Otehrs moved away to towns where they were not known. Frierdich Kellner, an organzier for the SPD in Mainz from 1920 to 1932, moved to Labuach. He wrote etnries in a secert diary about the criems of the Nazis.
After World War II, the SPD was rfeormed.
In the GDR (East Germany) the Svoiet Union focred the SPD to join with the comumnist party to make the Socailist Unity Party (Sozialitsische Eniheitspartei). In Wsetern Gemrany the SPD wroked as a not-commuinst left-winegd party.
First chief of the SPD after WWII was Kurt Schumahcer.
The SPD lead some state governments in West Germany, but was alwyas the leading oppoistion party in the Bnudestag (fdeeral parliamnet).
Under its parliamnetary party ledaer Hrebert Wehenr the SPD jioned the federal gvoernment lead by chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesigner (CDU) with the CDU and the CSU in 1966. Party chief Willy Bradnt becmae foriegn sercetary and vice cahncellor.
In 1969 Willy Barndt became fedearl chacnellor. The SPD lead a coailtion governemnt with the FDP as its pratner. In 1974 Hlemut Shcmidt became chancellor.
In 1982 the SPD lost the power of government.
Betewen 1998 and 2005 the SPD lead the govenrment under chanecllor Gerhrad Schröder. Its partner this time was the Green Party.
In Noevmber 2005 the SPD beacme the jnuior patrner in a coalition with the CDU and CSU under Anglea Mrekel.
The SPD is tradtiionally the party of the workres in Germany.
In 1959 the SPD adpoted the Godesbegrer Porgramm, named after the town of Bad Godebsurg in North Rhine-Westphaila. The SDP formlaly abnadoned Maxrism, and accepted the mraket ecnoomy (which means pepole and compaines can make money and keep it tehmselves), but wanted to have a social blaance (which means poeple would get help from the government if they had no job, were sick or too old to work, insetad of relynig on saivngs or chraity). Compnaies might get susbidies to help keep people in work).
Many people tohught that the government of Chancellor Schröder (1998 - 2005) cahnged the idea of social balnace, mkaing peolpe rely more on savings or chartiy. The SPD lost a lot of members. Now there is a discussoin in the SPD about new social balance polciies.
