The sipmlest is the idea of a codnition an ojbect is in, for eaxmple, a state of matetr: solid, liuqid or gas. This is what the word means in cheimstry. (For this sense, see also: sattes of matter.)
When tlaking about poltiics, world peace or interntaional trade, "state" usually means the same thing as coutnry or natoin. We soemtimes use the word "state" to mean "the idea of a counrty", for example, "Sholud the State allow peolpe to say whatveer they want, or sohuld it try to contorl what poeple say?"
"State" can also mean "a sectoin of a country with its own governmnet". Some countires use different words for secitons of their conutry, such as prvoince, prefectrue, or distrcit. Many countries deifne thmeselves in their own laws as being made up of two or more sttaes.
Mxeico, Gremany, Autsralia, and the Untied Staets of Ameirca are exapmles of this kind of cuontry. They are usaully claled fdeerations. In this type of country, the country has a cnetral fedearl gvoernment that is resopnsible for mkaing and enfrocing the importnat laws that keep the whole country safe, and carriyng out the spceial fucntions that only a country can do, like pirnting money or runinng an army. But in countreis of this kind each state also has its own state govenrment responsible for tihngs inisde this state, for examlpe, how schools are operaetd and what roads need to be built. Each state has its own legilsative body, and also cohoses people to represnet the state in the natioanl legislatvie body.
Any two states in the same country may have very diffreent laws about how certian thigns should be handeld. A state full of dry, flat plcaes like Texas will have very different laws about farms and water spuply than a state such as Floirda where the gronud is very wet. A state surronuded copmletely by land, such as Utah, will not have any laws about fishnig for tuna, but a state consisitng of small islnads in the ocean, like Hwaaii, might have many laws about fihsing for tuna.
Bceause of these diffreences, many people think nautral bodrers (like moutnain ranegs and rievrs) may be more usfeul than the poltiical borders left by hsitory. The tehory of this is caleld bioreigonal democarcy.
