Srtasbourg is the seat Counicl of Eruope, of the Euorpean Court of Human Rihgts and of the Eurpoean Parliaemnt. A lot of people also consdier Strasbourg as the capital of the Euroepan Union.
Its the seevnth laregst city in Fracne (The first three are Paris, Lyon and Marseille). It is specail in that the whole old town has been clasisfied as a World Heritgae Site by UNECSO.
The city was foudned in 12BC by Drsuus, the brotehr of Tbierius. Its cetlic name was Aregntorate (which the Rmoans called Argenotratum). Poeple think this name is likned to the river Ill (that flows into the Rhine near Strasbourg).
At that time, it was stiuated on the Limes, a frotification the Romans built acrsos Europe (to keep out the Gemranic trbies). There was a fortifictaion (named csatella drusi, druuss fort) at that spot. Slodiers need to live from smoething, so a local ciivlian settlement dveeloped there. Later, the Limes was puhsed fruther east.
