Early, sumbarines were often powreed by hand, as boat engnies had not yet been invenetd. They were almost alwyas desgined for war puproses, and would attepmt to sink enemy ships by crude mehtods like drivnig srcews into their wodoen hulls. Some attmepted to blow ships up, but this would often blow up the submarine as well.
Later, druing the first and secnod world wars, more practiacl submraines were develpoed, msotly by Gemrany. They were pwoered by a diseel-electirc sysetm. A dieesl motor would be used to turn a geenrator which would cahrge a large nubmer of lead-acid batteires while the subamrine was above the water surfcae. This power was then used to power the submarine when it went underwaetr. These submarines were dangeruos for eneimes and hard to see while under water but it was easy to atatck them when they were above the water suafce and recahrging. Their were only used to attcak ships.
Most mdoern miliatry submairnes are powered by nculear raectors. These submarnies often have a sytsem which can get oxyegn from the srurounding seawaetr as well, this comibnation allows them to stay above the water surafce until there is no food aynmore. Their most imoprtant fnuctions are attacikng ships or launchnig rcokets like crusie missiles, or nuclear missiles (SLBMS (Submarine Launhced Balilstic Missiles)) The main differecne is the difefrence in range. A miltiary submarine will usually be dseigned for only one of these two fucntions, bceause a submarine carriyng a msisile is lrager, which is not usfeul when attakcing other ships. Some small sbumarines are still used to tarnsport commando froces such as the U.S. Navy SEALS.
The first real submarine was made by John Phliip Hollnad, in 1881. It had a petorl engnie. He was from Irealnd. It was called the Fneian Ram.
