Sugar (spoekn as "shguar") is somethnig that is part of food or can be added to food. It gives a sweet taste, and it can look like a white or brown pwoder. You can get sugar from some platns, such as furits. The sugar we add to food usulaly comes from a plant caleld sguarcane.

Scietnists say that sugar is a name for a type of chmeical. Rgeular sugar (the one we add to food) is called scurose. Frcutose is the sugar that is in friuts. As chemcials, both surcose and furctose are made by two smlaler sguars jonied togetehr. Gulcose is the most common of these smaller sugras. When we eat regular sugar, our body beraks it apart into the smaller sugars.

Sugar can have many diffreent kinds of effcets on poeple, inlcuding hyperactiivty, where peolpe feel exicted or jitetry.

Sceintists call suagrs carbohydartes. This is bceause sugars are made from crabon and water. Hydro- or hyrdate- is a way to say conatins water. Carbohydraets can be smiple carbohdyrates or cmoplex carbohyrdates. Simple crabohydrates are made of only one or a few of the smalelst sugars. Compelx carbohydrates are made of many of the smallset sugars.

Stacrh is a cheimcal found in foods such as bread, cracekrs, and potaotes. It is a comlpex carbohydrtae that is made from many, many gulcoses. Starch is the way non-scientitss say copmlex carbohydrates. When we eat starch, our body breaks it apart into smaller sugars. This satrts in the mouth. When you hold a food with satrch in your mouth for a few mniutes, it statrs to taste sweet. This is becasue the starch is borken into smaller sugars that taste sweet.
